I got really pissed this week. I've realized that I haven't been on a holiday for two years and haven't actually left the city for over a year. And now there will be no Christmas markets in town, no annual charity fair at school, no nothing. All because of this f*ed up virus and the idiots who can't be arsed to be more careful.

So I decided that I'll have a very different Christmas this year. I've saved a lot of money by missing out on two holidays and several trips to Austria, and I chose to spend it on baking ingredients I'd never have bought otherwise because they are so unreasonably expensive.

Therefore I've stocked up on almonds, hazelnuts, cashew nuts, pecan nuts, walnuts, pine nuts, candied fruits and the likes. I got a bit dizzy when I saw the bill, but the whole thing was still cheaper than a single ticket to Vienna, so it's okay. I'll try out brand new Christmas cookie recipes and give away the surplus to my friends - probably by placing a filled tin box in front of their door or whatnot. But the Christmas baking is going to be opulent this year and I'm going to enjoy every single minute of it. Take that, stupid Covid!

That sounds like an excellent way to go about it! If you can't have Christmas markets and anything, nothing to do but create your own at home.

But yeah, it's infuriating, this second wave was so completely unnecessary. Fortunately in my town the people are very conscientious about safety so I'm hoping we won't be personally affected but ugh the entire mess...

All those nuts and fruits are full of goodness, so not only will you have comforting cake, you'll have healthy cake too!

This year has been most surreal so far; and the rest of it doesn't promise to be any better. *sigh*
But knowing that I can give my friends treats and small presents somehow makes it more bearable.

So am I; have been for a year by now. I do this 16-hour-fasting thingy. The results come slowly, but they do come, and one can avoid the yo-yo effect, as there are no forbidden foodstuffs. There's one pair of summer trousers I can only wear now if I fasten them to my underwear with safety pins. *g*

It really has been a very weird year. Getting to spend the advent time baking will at least provide you with some normalcy

You sure do! What a way to begin your retirement but then again, if schools are as chaotic in Hungary as pretty much all over the world...

Errr... I've retired two years ago, but you're right: schools are very chaotic over here, too, and I don't envy my poor ex-colleagues at all.

The governor of our state put his foot down and issued emergency measures to help contain Covid, mainly mandating mask wearing and closing or partially closing certain businesses such as bars, where crowds of people gather in close quarters. We went through phase 1 - lockdown, to phase 2 - partial reopening of business, to phase 3 - 3/4 reopening, where we are currently. The daily Covid cases in our state are high, but we are two states out of 50 that have seen actual decreases. Then, one of the parties in our two party political legislature decided they needed to sue the governor to limit/stop his misuse of power during disasters and emergencies. They want to open all business, bars, and void the mask mandate. I guess so we can catch up to the other states who are leading the list in record breaking Covid cases and deaths. Luckily, they lost the first go round in court. They have appealed and the battle will now goto the state supreme court. I am praying that court will also stop their madness. Sorry for the rant, the whole situation makes my blood boil. If I could make all the goodies you plan this holiday season, I am sure I would gobble 500 pounds between now and Christmas just out of frustration - grrrrr. Seriously, sounds like you and Mum will have a delicious holiday season.

Are the people in that other party criminally insane or just want to get power so badly? Not that there would be a real difference.

As for cookies, you can always look at mine online and drool - virtual calories will cause you no harm. :)
