Today is the 53th anniversary of my grandfather's death. Even after all those decades, I still miss him terribly. Mum and I lit a candle for him and called up some of our favourite memories. Always bittersweet, these moments.

This is as I never saw him: with hair! *g*

Otherwise, it was a simple day. I've made a food run in the morning, buying unreasonable amount of baking supplies aside from the usual necessities. I'm planning to try out new recipes this year and besides, everyone needs an expensive and unhealthy hobby, right?

Today, the sun came out for a couple of hours, so I had a nap in the early afternoon. I love sleeping in sunlight - in this season, when it isn't so harsh and bright. All our windows look to the south-west, so my room was bathed in gold while I slept. It was lovely.

I also finished Chapter 9 of Sleeping Dragons 5, typed up Chapter 8 completely and started on Chapter 10. The original story layout foresees 15 chapters plus an epilogue, so - if the story doesn't spawn any additional chapters, which is known to have happened in the past way too frequently - I've nearly 2/3 parts done. It would be nice to finish this one within the year.

In terms of human contact I had phone chats with my friends Erna and Monica. Thank God (and Alexander Graham Bell) for the phone, otherwise I'd lead a very lonely life!

Right now, I'm collecting Christmas cookie recipes I'd like to try this year. I'm saving them as text files, then turn them into doc files, in which format I print them out and file them in my recipe book. This is fun!

Can you get your hands on dried cranberries? If yes, I'll send you the recipe for the cranberry sticks.

Okay, I checked the dictionary and it gave me two different meanings of cranberries. Now I have no idea what it is I actually have in my pantry. It's the thing they make sauce of to wildbret, I think...?

No, that are Preiselbeeren and you get them in a glass? More like a jam?

We buy them more like this:

They are dried.

Mine are dried and in a cellophane bag, too. But I think then might be Preiselbeeren.

That is true. It saved my sanity quite a few times when work was being hard to bear.

I hope you and your Mom had a good experience remembering today.

2020 is definitely a year to indulge in the joys we can still have, and baking is a good one. It's very relaxing, too.

Indeed, we had. Thank you. :)
My grandparents, although both long gone, are always with us. There's no day we wouldn't mention either the one or the other - what they would think of this or what they would say about that. They were both wonderful people.

It is wonderful that they are still such a large part of your lives, you are truly keeping them alive in and through your memories.

In one way I wish I was interested enough to take up baking. It sounds restful. In another way, I'm glad I'm not...because I would end up the size of a barn. Cookies sound fun, though.

They are. I always bake ungodly amounts - then I give them all away, save for a small selection for our Christmas table. There was a year when I baked for three or four different friends/colleagues who didn't have the time and/or energy to do so themselves.

Good luck with the cookie recipes. Every time I try that, I meet with great resistance and since I don't have work to take care of the extras, it'll be the tried and true this year. I'm glad you had a good day, all in all.

I like trying out new things. Sometimes they turn out great, sometimes disastrous, but there hasn't been one yet that we couldn't have eaten, despite their looks. *g*

And handsome! Grandma, OTOH, was a real beauty. This is the photo Grandpa saw in the shop window of the photographer and fell in love without having ever met Grandma before:

Wasn't she something? No-one else in the entire extended family has even come close.
