On Friday I spent the whole evening preparing the cherry stones my friend Enie brought me (they do have one cherry tree, and her mother is making sour cherry jam in one go for weeks) for use. It is a lengthy process, especially if the stones you get are already half-dried and the rest of the fruit flesh on them makes them clump together.

So, at first I boiled them for at least two hours. I drained them and changed the water for three or four times (can't really remember). Then I spread them on kitchen tissue paper to dry a bit before (in Saturday morning) I put them into the oven, at the lowest setting, for an hour and a half, approximately. I'm not really sure as I had to take them out while baking the cheesecake. *g*

Then they cooled for the day and the night, and this morning I finally filled them into two more pillow cases. I couldn't use up everything, as these are really small pillows, but that doesn't matter. Some people promised me even more cherry stones; if they keep their promises, Louise (the baby sewing machine) and I will have to make more pillow cases anyway.

Other than that, this is a quiet day. Mum and I watched Mass on the telly - it was surprisingly simple, humane and understated for a Catholic ceremony, we were pleased. Then I made [livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat's amazing carrot and ginger soup, as I bought a big chunk of ginger last week and didn't want it to go bad in this heat. We had soup and cheesecake for lunch, which was nice enough. This is not the weather for heavy meals anyway.

Writing-wise I even managed to squeeze in some tinkering with a somewhat problematic scene. Problematic in the sense that while it is a canon scene, some of the characters are from Camelot, not from Merlin BBC, so I had to twist stuff around a bit. It still isn't finished, but small progress is still progress, right?

Yesterday, I posted another chapter to Magic Mirror on AO3. The story got 18 new hits in a night... and that will be the end of it, most likely. Voice of experience speaking here. Still no comments, but no comments are still the lesser evil - it could have caught the attention of another self-important nitpicker, after all.

Your word in God's ear, although I won't put my hopes too high. I seem to attract self-righteous, rude know-it-alls.

That carrot and ginger soup is a good simple thing, isn't it!

It is Mum's second choice when I ask what I should cook (the first one being the turkey ragout soup with estragon).

The soup sounds wonderful and cheesecake is one of my favourite desserts, however, I don't get to indulge often. Wish I had a cherry tree in my yard lie your friend. The guy next door to us has a towering lemon tree and the lemons are just now starting turn yellow. However, he doesn't do anything with most of them, just gathers the ones that fall to the ground and puts them out for trash. Last year the bag came undone and there were hundreds of lemons out on the street :0(

That is a criminal waste! Too bad that none of the lemons fall into your garden. I bet you could find all sorts of creative use for them - if nothing else, dried lemon zests would be wonderful for cooking!

In my experience, summer in the Northern Hemisphere tends to result in fewer readers, likes and comments, as everyone heads outdoors.

There is no real difference between seasons when it comes to my stories, unfortunately.

What are the cherry-stone pillows for?

Warmed up they are very good for aching joints or tense neck/back/whatever muscles. Cooled, they are good for insect bites or serve instead of cold gel packs.
