Today my choir mate (the one who's turning 50, soon) dropped in for a short visit and brought me a sizeable bag of sour cherry stones. Her mother was apparently making sour cherry jam, and she "rescued" the stones for me before they'd go to the rubbish bin. Yay!

I've boiled the stones for 10 minutes and now they're in the oven, at the lowest heat, where they'll remain for an hour or so. Presumably this is the way to avoid the appearance of mould, plus one can kill off any "stowaways" as well. We'll see.

In any case, I think I've got enough stones for one pillow now. Other friends have promised to save cherry stones for me, so there might be even more. I'm really excited about this project and am building up courage to use my mini sewing machine for making the pillow cases. I have this problem with sewing/cutting/folding/whatever in a straight line, and the machine sews faster than I can follow, so it will probably be an adventure. *g*

I also made a food run in the morning, went to the pharmacy for Mum's medicine, went to the bank to deal with their utter idiocy (too long to explain and I'm still not sure why can't they do what they're supposed to do without me asking them to do it every.single.time), went to the newsagent's to buy the new crossword puzzle book, and then made another food run, this time for mineral water.

Afterwards I worked a bit on Enie's 50-yr-anniversary journal. Then Evie called to tell me about the wedding of her younger son (which was yesterday), and we had lunch an hour later because of this. (I still had to cook it, no matter how quick and easy it was).

And now it's half past seven again and I don't know where the time has gone! I can't understand retirees who're whining all the time that sitting at home is boring and they don't know what to do with themselves. Why, if the day had 48 hours it still wouldn't be quite enough for me!

You could - of course - stop with that sleeping thing ... takes away so much time. ;-)

I have never heard anyone using cherry stones for a pillow. I wait to hear how comfortable it is.

It's not for sleeping, actually. Warmed in the microwave or in the oven, cherry stone pillows are very good for back-aches, tensions and the likes. Just like electric blankets. Put into the freezer for a few minutes they're equally good for cooling insect bites and small bruises. That's why they are fairly small, 20 cm by 30 cm, usually, so that they can be put to the right place while still staying warm (or cold, as the case may be) for a while.

I didn't know it before, either. But the idea seemed too good not to give it a try.

What is the harm? I've heard of rice pillows being used like that

I am now trying to consider how many kilos of cherries need to be consumed to give enough cherries for a small comfort pillow.

I know what you mean about wondering about the people who complain that they get bored with retirement!

Well, they are really warm packs (or cold packs) for small woes, so they don't need to be too large. The website where I took the instructions from says 20 cm by 30 cm.

Yes, I was thinking of something about that size - would it need 3 or 4kg of actual fruit for each, do you think?

I honestly don't know. I must ask Enie how much fruit it was. The stones she brought today filled a one-liter glass jar used for fruit preserves.

Forgot to add: according to the website you need 300-500 gr stones to a 20cm by 30cm pillow.

Well, yeah, if you only deal with them twice a week they tend to pile up.

I've found the older I get, the faster the days go by. Or, so it seems. That is, unless I am doing something I despise, then time crawls.
