I was lazy today. Aside from baking a batch of cheesy buns (because, as I might have mentioned before, I'VE GOT YEAST NOW!!!) I basically lounged in front of the telly and watched re-runs of my favourite programmes, like Das große Promibacken, Der Trödeltrupp, Auf Streife and Zuhause im Glück.

I neglected my self-appointed social duties, aka didn't call anyone. I just didn't feel like that. Sometimes it gets to me that if I want to hear anyone, I have to make that phone call myself. I know I'll do it again next week, but today I was a little pissed off. Sometimes I wonder how long it would take for my (supposed) Real Life friends to realize that I've died.

Did finish another unit of the (hopefully) paid translation, though. I'm dreading the next one as it is fifteen pages long, but I'm almost at the 2/3 margin, so I'm still cautiously optimistic.

WAIT WHAT YOU GOT YEAST???

Congratulations! Cheese buns sound tasty and like a good use for that yeast.

Yes, I did. You've apparently missed my Post of Triumph(TM) a couple of days ago. *g*

Tomorrow I'm giving one of Grandma's most gorgeous recipes a try to use up the other half of the package I opened today. If it's any good I'll post a picture and the recipe.

I sure did miss that! It's great you were able to snatch some, took you long enough dedicated hunting, too.

Good luck with the recipe tomorrow!

I am resisting the urge to do any more baking for now as we then eat too much. But cheesy buns would be very, very, tempting.

I keep reading that as "baking a batch of yeasty buns."

Well, they are made with yeast, so you're not entirely wrong. ;)

And they're almost ridiculously easy to make. I used to bake them with the kids in afternoon school all the time. Do you want the recipe?

Oh - yes please. Although I might have to wait for a while to access yeast here :)

There was an article in the local newspaper today how to make yeast yourself - I've seen that online as well already.
It didn't sound very appetizing, though.

Okay, here it goes. The ingredients are for about 70 pieces, so I always make half a portion, and while I never tried making them with instant yeast, I'm fairly sure that it would work just fine.

Ingredients:
400 gr white flour
250 gr margarine
25 gr yeast (or 1 package instant yeast)
200 ml créme freche
120 gr grated cheese (whichever you happen to have at hand)
3 teaspoons of salt
1 teaspoon of sugar

1 egg yolk and 50 gr grated cheese for decoration

How it is done:
1. Mix all ingredients on your working surface and make the dough. You don't need to kneed it or whatnot. I usually start with mixing the yeast with the sugar and the créme freche, but basically you can do it in any order you want.

2. Roll out the dough 1 cm thick and cut out small circles. When I make them for us, I use a cookie cutter of 3 cm diameter. If I make it for guests, I use a smaller one to have more individual pieces, but it really doesn't matter.

3. Glaze the little things with egg yolk and decorate them with a pinch of grated cheese each.

4. Bake them in a pre-heated oven, at middle heat, for about 10-15 minutes, depending on your oven. They should be golden brown. You can grease the baking tin or use baking paper, it makes no difference (save for when you do the washing-up, of course).

And that is basically it. The most time-consuming part is the grating of the cheese, otherwise you can be done within 40 minutes or so.

And it takes forever. Not the right method when you spontaneously decide to bake something. I saw it, too, and gave up on it immediately. Perhaps I might give it a try, should I be really desperate, but I'm not quite there yet.

Thank you - I have copied it into my recipe file - I will look for yeast next time I am shopping.

They remind me of my cheese scones, sort of filling the same niche, but I think they will be a very different texture.

Probably, yeah. They are best when fresh, but today, three days later, they are still very enjoyable.

Cheesy buns sound delicious. I was lucky to find bread this last time at the supermarket.
