It started at 8 am with the arrival of S, the guy who does our annual carpet cleaning. We have wall-to-wall, fixed carpet floors in all rooms, including the balcony, so it's really a big undertaking that requires special household machines that are beyond our talents to use. So S comes once a year and does it for us and we happily pay him for it.

Of course, this means that the flat is like a sauna for the rest of the day - assuming we are lucky and the weather is nice and hot. We were lucky, in the morning and the early afternoon, save for the fact that we always get swollen joints from the damp heat and all that. But once a year it has to be.

Unfortunately, an hour ago the promised stormy rain arrived and hit our leaking balcony in just the right angle to let a handsome amount of water in - and we're talking about a closed balcony here! I stood under the leak for about 50 minutes, pressing various rags against the wall to mop up the water before it could land on the wood panelling inside and make it rot. In such moments I thank all saints responsible for weather patterns that such storms didn't come while we were in Austria. Otherwise we'd have been wading in rain water on the (closed) balcony upon our arrival up to our ankles.

Apparently, general work to seal any possible leaks on the entire 10-storey house have begun last week and will take another 3 to 4 weeks to be finished. I'll be interested to see if this will help with our problem at all. After all, the sodding balcony has been sealed from the in- and outside several times already.

Wish us luck!
