Watching Crusade
Feb. 23rd, 2004 08:44 pm... and finding interesting things.
In order to take a little vacation from LOTR-fandom, I started re-watching Crusade - the short-lived Babylon 5 spinoff - again. I don't want to ofend B5-fans, but the spinoff is utter crap. Small wonder it only lasted half a season.
But. Among all those gender- and faceless characters, there is one absolutely fascinating one: techno-mage Galen. The guy who says things like this:
"We all have something to hide.
We all have something to tell.
We all have a secret name.
We all have a question;
one question that unlocks all others"
(in The Well of Forever)
Or:
"All roads intersect with the Path of Sorrows - sooner or later...ˇ
(in The Path of Sorrows, obviously)
I'm so going to use these and similar sentences as opening quotes for my Annatar/Celebrimbor story! So much about taking leave from the Tolkien fandom. I'm doomed, I fear.
But Galen truly is a fascinating character. And Peter Woodword (sp?) the actor who plays him, is incredible. The only episodes of Crusade that work in some ways are the ones that feature him, big way.
I think I'll need to re-watch the B5-episode where the techno-mages make their first appearance. Elric makes some fairly cool speeches, too - though some of those, like not meddling with the affairs of mages because they are subtle and quick to anger, are obviously "borrowed" from the Professor. Lord Gildor was most offended.
In other news, I'm struggling with the Big Name Problem, trying to find suitable names for all four wives and two mistresses of Forlong the Fat, not to mention his offspring of various levels of legitimity. The Professor should have created (and rejected) more names we could use.
Anyway, I find the most exciting quotes, and watching the actor is truly a delight. I don't doubt that his character will find its way into my little corner of the Ardaverse one day. Not as a mage, of course, but in some other role. He's just too cool.
