2 vintage variations and a purple one with silk roses:

On the other side of creativity, my stories aren't doing so grand on AO3. I'm used to have stories with more chapters than reviews, but I thing I'm heading towards a new low: stories with more chapters than hits. I think I'll disable the hit counter before the frustration gets to me too much.

It is always a bad idea to turn around and look at the amount of hits or reviews one of your stories gets on a site such as AO3. FFN isn't a grand idea either to look at, to be completely honest.

The one thing that I advise is to not look at the hits option on AO3, period. Even if you do disable it, I do believe you can see the amount of people (or times a person has checked out your story) when you sign into your account.

It's disheartening, but I say continue writing. Have you tried fictionpress for your original work? I don't ever suggest going to wattpad. It's a great site for some people, but it's terrible with the drama. I remember publishing one of my original historical novels. After being accused of creating multiple fake accounts and having the multiple accounts of the same individual troll my work, I decided to stop with wattpad.

However, I don't ever advise giving up writing just because your work isn't getting 'enough attention'.

Good luck with your writing endeavours!

P.S: I hope you don't mind a complete stranger coming to your journal like this. I saw that you like Merlin and other things that I find interesting... I swear I don't make it a habit to stalk random journals.

*swears on it...*

Those are gorgeous! I love all three designs!

On AO3, I mainly post just in the Sherlock fandom and I find that also posting notices on various LJ communities dedicated to either Sherlock fic or all versions of Sherlock Holmes, helps the hits. Maybe just dropping things on AO3 works for other people, but I find mine always need a little help 'being found'. That said, all the LJ comms I watch seem quieter than they used to be.

I'm glad you like them - they are a lot of minutiae work, but I'm pleased with the results. Currently I've got 29 and two more in the working, I'll have lots of presents by Easter.

The stories I'm posting are a series of old Tolkienfic - and I mean old, some of them over 10 years old - but somehow I hoped for younger readers or those avoiding the Pit of Voles, for whom they'd be brand new. Ah, well, even at the time when the fandom really boomed I wasn't one of the Big Name Authors.

Eh, I've got stories with less than 100 hits in more than a year. There are quite a lot of stories, even by fairly well-known authors, in older fandoms (eg BtVS, Potter) with just a handful of hits.

What gets me is where 1000s of people hit the story, but hardly any bother to press kudos (or to comment, but one mustn't expect miracles).

The eggs are beautiful!

I also find that the older fandoms just don't get that much attention unless there's a specific event or post that draws people to it again. I have no answers.

Especially as Tolkien's universe is a tiny bit older and somewhat more complex than anything the television and film industry has coughed up since its very existence.

Beautiful!

re: I think interest in Fanfic, in general, is falling off since a) there doesn't seem to be too many new shows or movies that inspire any writers (which is odd since bad tv makes for great fanfic re-writes) and b) how much time has passed since show/movie was seen. Rather depressing as I'm just starting to find and read fanfic on a tv series from the 1990s.
What really gets me is how long some writers take to update their story. I get that real life takes priority, however even I have to stop waiting for an update after 4 years :(
Also, having an author promise that the story is complete or will be updated and no updates appear. Had to drop an interesting Ianto Lives stories after a promised posting never showed ("the story's complete" "it'll be posted soon" - Ha!)

It is certainly true for Torchwood, for example. But for that formula to work, you need to get into the show in the first place, and I haven't found anything lately that could draw me in. Well, save for Lucifer, but I'm not really inspired to write fanfic for that.

As for unfinished tales, yeah, it can be frustrating. However, from the author's point of view, it isn't always a voluntary thing. I've got some stories that have been on hiatus for a decade or even longer, and while I honestly intend to finish them one day, inspiration has just not hit yet. That's why both "Atlantis Café" and "A Matter of Time" are temporarily finished, as the first, complete parts of a series that might never come to exist, as much as I want that to happen. The same is true for "Adventures of a Consulting Time Lord". I've got ideas for the next part and the one after that, but they're just that: ideas that I couldn't put into the right context yet.
