Or to eat deep-fried stuff.

Mum and I decided to do a 6-week meat-free cure, to detoxicate our system. That's nothing new; we've done so before. In the 5 weeks since then, we ate exactly 5 time some ready-made, frozen food, i.e. fish fingers, croquettes filled with spinach, baked cheese and so on. Mum hasn't experienced any problems, but my stomach has gone down the toilet. I have recurring heartburn, often the feeling as if I had a knot in my throat, and I don't want to eat at all in the late afternoon or in the evening. I never had those problems before.

Now, it is possible, that I simply can't deal with the breadcrumb coating the food factories use - I never get problems with it when we make Schnitzel at home - but it's very annoying, and I hope it will clean out of my system eventually. As practical as not eating after early afternoon is for the slim figure might be, I'm a Hobbit in the heart of my hearts and want my appetite back.

Ready-made food (or cafeteria food, which is basically the same) can be hard on your stomach if you aren't used to it! Had to learn that the hard way when I moved to Göttingen.

Although getting it from one such meal a week is pretty tough, sorry to hear you have such a delicate stomach :(

Must be the getting old part. There were times I could eat junk food like there was no tomorrow, but nowadays... I think there is something in the breadcrumb covering that seriously disagrees with me. Either the food or the texture... or both.

Just a thought here: maybe it's the oil in the breadcrumb covering? I became intolerant to soy in my late 30s. Note it's *NOT* an allergy -- my digestive system just can't handle it. Like being lactose intolerant. I mention this because the symptoms you describe sound much like what happens to me if I eat something with soy bean oil in it. And soy bean oil is cheap (we grow HUGE amounts of soybeans in the US) and thus it is often used in things like breadcrumb-type coatings.

You might be right. I stopped eating that particular sort of pre-made food and the symptoms vanished. Thanks for the idea!
