Mary Sue & her defenders

lindahoyland. So far, the only comment I got was from an Anonymouse who thinks they might lost interest in the story because, and I quote, it is a shame that I made Gwen of noble birth. Never mind that the hints have been there from early on...
Now, I am glad the review was anonymous, so that I could simply remove it, but what is it with people both ignoring the big, honking AU label and defending blatant Mary Sues? Because that is what BBC Merlin's Guinevere is. A servant who gets to mouth at the court nobles unpunished and then gets married by the king, really? Other than in fairytales, where does it happen? Certainly not in the original legends, which my little Anonymouse probably doesn't know. Or else they would have minded the statement in the summary.
The whole thing reminds me of Peter Jackson fans who never read Tolkien but feel entitled to criticize fics that are clearly labelled as bookverse for not following the movies. Like the one who got confused over my Lindir, which is a decade or more older than PJ's version, having blond hair. Idiots.
On a completely unrelated note, I made my first paper ball today. It was great fun, and not halas as complicated as I feared it would be.
