"An Excellent Mystery"

Aka "The Adventure of the Lost Luggage".
While doing some research on Victorian travelling trunks for the second interlude of "Adventures" - points at previous entry - I got bitten by a particularly vicious plotbunny. Because working on half a dozen stories in as many fandoms at the same time obviously wasn't enough. *le sigh*
In any case, "An Excellent Mystery" (and yes, I did steal the title from Ellis Peters, but it fits so well) is based on that lost luggage school exercise. Only with canon-era Sherlock Holmes and John Watson working on a solution. There are Sherlock BBC characters (like Mycroft, Anderson and Sally Donovan) playing the ones in the mystery, Holmes and Watson are "played" by BC and MF, and while Mary is still "played" by AA, she's her timid canon self.
The research required for a story taking place in Victorian times is mind-boggling. I've done nothing else this week. Literally. It ate all my spare time (granted, there isn't much of that, but still).
In particular, I've researched the following topics so far:
- Victorian Birmingham
- Police in Victorian Birmingham
- The Grand Hotel, Birmignham
- The Theatre Royal in Birmingham
- New Street Railway Station, Birmgingham
- Hawkhurst in Victorian times
- Fashion of the 1870s and 1880s
- Victorian households
- Victorian servants' clothing
- Minor Sherlock Holmes characters
- "The Well-dressed Maid"
The story is largely based on the facts given in the "Lost Luggage" mystery - again, look up my previous entry and follow the link. Currently, I've 4 different solutions but haven't decided which one to use in the final version.
