Unexpected headway with "Adventures"

The 5th story arc is almost complete. Actually, this is the most original arc of all - a lot of the earlier stuff is rewriting of either the pilot episode or of some original ACD story. Well, this one is my version of The Speckled Band, of course, but I feel that for the first time I actually managed to come up with a truly original twist; one that brings the whole thing closer to the Whoniverse for a change.

I really should cut back on the canon rewriting stuff drastically. Perhaps that's why the casual reader isn't interested in my stories. Plus, it stunts my creativity a great deal, since I respect canon too much, in most cases. Clearly, I can't do it with "Sleeping Dragons", as that is sort of a fix-it, or with the "Birthright" series (Andromeda, in case anyone is interested), for the same reason. But I should give it some serious effort otherwise. Even if it means more painful writing, for the language part of it.

The truth is, I actually love doing canon rewrites. It allows me to fix for myself what I don't like in canon. Unfortunately, it also seems to magically draw in two diagonally opposite sorts of idiots: the one who cries plagiarism as soon as they discover a similar-sounding line of dialogue and the canon nazi that clearly doesn't know what the big, honking AU label means.

That is very kind of you, thanks. Actually, I meant with language pains the fact that I have to come up with my own technobabble. *g*
Also, writing Trek is a research-heavy project. The TNG Technical Manual is a very hard piece of text to digest.

May I politely disagree with your idea that stopping the canon rewrites? First of all, the ability to modify stuff in canon we did not like is one of the major reasons for writing fanfic in the first place (the other two being gaps in canon or developing characters of themes beyond the end of the canon plot), it seems to me. So why should you deny yourself a motivation for writing for the sake of a potential readership, my dear? Believe me, judging by your Tolkien stuff, the problem is not you. Rather, the disparaging reviews stem from people too lazy to be willing to engage with complex writing. Us non-readers on the other hand may just not have the time to engage with your writing as it ought to be engaged with, sadly. To cut a long story short: as far as I can see, your writing is not the problem at all *hugs tight*

You're right, fixing canon mistakes is a serious motivation to write fanfic. Still, I sometimes feel that it would do me good to produce more original plots. *sighs*
And not for a readership, either. "The Toreador Chronicles" is one of the most original pieces I've ever written, and it has more chapters than reviews. So no, I don't live in any illusions that getting away from canon storylines would suddenly make me immensely popular.
