We haz them, yesss, Preciousss. :((

I just had to throw out two entire pages of my ongoing ST:VOY fic, after just having made some torturous headway after a hiatus that had been several years long.

What happened? This is the Alternate Resolutions story, in which Chakotay is stranded on New Earth because of an insect bite - but not with Janeway like in canon, with Ensign Wildman and her kids. (She has two in this story: Naomi, who's sneaked onboard back on DS9, cause it's just unrealistic that she'd become 9 or 10 year old in just half the time, and little Elrem who was born in the same way Naomi was in canon.)

The couple of Ocampa who came aboard in the pilot (Alternate Caretaker), plus some who joined them in the alternate version of "Cold Fire", decide to follow Chak and Sam and build a new home on New Earth. Now they're trying to play Family Robinson, despite the tech they were given by Voyager, and the question of spinning and weaving came up.

I PM-ed one of the Sherlock authors who wrote a couple of excellent one-shots in which hand spinning was involved and asked her if she could suggest any online sources, since I know night to nothing about the topic and didn't want to plagiarize her. She suggested me a search keyword for Google.

A clear case of "thanks for nothing", right? I thought so, too, but I tried it in different variations anyway. And while researching, I realized that the whole idea of them working on a (replicated) spinning wheel was just not reliable. Luckily, I found a few very good pages concerning hand spinning with a drop spindle, so I'm going with that.

It turned out well enough in the end, I think. Only that now I'll have to tear out two whole pages and rewrite an entire section of Chapeter 6. *is pissed*

Aww :(
It is very sad when people aren't willing to help. Hopefully the progress you are making will survive the setback.

Actually, I think it would even work better like this. I can have them make knitware instead of trying to face the hardships of hand-weaving. A knitting needle is infinitely easier to use than a loom, and it would look more convincing for them to learn how to knit, too.
