*nods* Yes, there is a very different attitude towards fan works in the East. Say, some Japanese mangaka (manga artists) actually produce doujinshi (fan-made manga) themselves to draw these ideas which didn't fit into canon. I don't know exactly what the copyright rules are for fan-made doujinshi, but I know they are sold in book form for real money and they are extremely common, so at the very least, they must be tolerated. Some of the most famous manga artists/groups even started out by drawing doujinshi and no one thinks less of them for it.
