... or is the Internet steadily getting more and more user-unfriendly? Yahoo deletes all Geocities sites, LJ is doing what LJ currently does, Hotmail changes its layout and work-wise every other week, making everything take longer and more complicated, there are more restrictions everywhere, and you're forced to get newer and newer versions of your browser b/c nothing is compatible with the older versions anymore.

I'm so fed up with all the changes. I want my peace and quiet. I want my websites back, the ones I could actually use without running to my computer science teacher colleagues for help every other day.

And, on a less technical side of things, I want my online friends back who've got eaten by a giant cyber-jellyfish over the recent years.

Yeah, I'm getting old.

WAH!!!!

I sympathize: I've just spent nearly a half-hour figuring out SugarSynch, which my parents are using to share photos. With us on opposite sides of the continent, one sister moving around the same continent and the other sister on another continent (Europe), it makes sense to have a place to share such things without needing to download huge attachments or store everyone's photos on one's own PC all the time, but... I'm with you: when the tool begins to consume as much time as the task the tool is meant to help one perform, something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

(And you and I should be given an all-expenses-paid trip to Denmark to discuss it... [grin])

Well, since I've never been to Denmark, where, BTW, the lovely Lissa dwells, I'm all for exploratory trips - especially when all expenses are paid by someone else.

OTOH, with my luck, I'd only gain a few new fandoms or a few dozen new plotbunnies, so it probably isn't such a good idea, after all. Meeting you in person, though, would be lovely.

Speaking of Internet quirks, the_south_haven aka Edhellond has stopped sending out automated messages about the Tolkien Quiz being updated. It's *not* being updated, true, given that it's run its circle more than a year ago, but that isn't any excuse for Yahell for *not* sending the messages, is it? *grrrrrrrrrrr*

To be honest, I'm usually the last to learn about these things - from the angry posts of my flist. My blogging activity is, as a rule, restricted to reading fanfic, posting fanfic and whining about my genius not being appreciated. *g*

BTW: I've just imported my entire LJ to Dreamwidth, for safety's sake. Everything appeared, save from the comments, although I checked that box, too. Do you think it didn't work, or do comments just need more time to be imported?

Just try it again - maybe the servers are a little overloaded with roughly 20.000 new users in 3 days doing the exact same thing *g*

Check your inbox on DW, you should get a message for each successful import.

*HUGSHUGS*

It's not just you, the Internet services are really getting more unfriendly, these days. The time when all that stuff came at nearly no payment is over, they wish to make cash these days.
If you have an Internet-savvy friend, he or she might be able to help you set up your own server, whicgh could host your own website. Or you might try one of the fan-owned services like fancrone (a blog-site done by fans). Currently, I have not yet felt the need to try one of these myself, though, although I have a Dreamwith account just in case lj forces me to leave the site.

Otherwise? One can just duck into the trenches and hope to weather the storm. :(

And I hope you know that you still have friends, even if some of them (like me) are quiet from time to time. :)

*Is getting old, too*

I agree with you though - too many changes happening. I don't like them. *hugs*

You're both very welcome to drop by! *g*

I hear you on the issue; just spent ½ hour this morning trying to figure out why I could not do the updates itunes keep suggesting. Finally realized that I never use the thing anyway and got rid of it. Hah!!

What's your ID there?

Will do. I, too, have the same username over there - it's easier that way. I've just copied my entire LJ - seven years worth of stuff! - to DW, just in case, although I do intend to stay here as long as I see it bearable.

Well, I'm still here, though at present I'm swallowed up by work and other concerns, such as leaking roofs and a daughter who needs more attention than usual because she's in her exam year. I'll try to be more perceptible, though.

And yes, I hate al those changes, too. But then, I'm getting old as well!

Well, yeah, the problem is, you can only copy your personal journal - not the comms where all the fanfic is. But losing 7 years worth of personal entries would be a shame, too.

They're both doing fine. I secretly suspect Larissa of going for a cum laude graduation, though she denies it when asked about it. Valerie has moved to a student room in Utrecht, is starting her second year at University and trying to obtain a driers' licence, which turns out more difficult than she thought.
How's your mother doing?

When you have a pieces/parts crappy computer, the internet changes really frustrate.

I've been away for awhile, again. My Father passed away on July 2 but we did not have his memorial service until late August as my step-mother had a stroke and was in therapy. So, it has not been the best of times these last few months.

Just do a new import - this time the comments should be imported as well (and no worries, your journal won't be imported twice)

Are you able to see my LiveJournal? If not, let me know: I just gained insight into the answer to that question while visiting my parents (in a place where I've never lived), so I wrote about it. I'd be happy to let you read it.

Two very short answers would be:
1) I was born and lived my first 10-11 years in the Midwest in an area whose European settlers were largely Scandinavian.
2) I currently live in New England in the U.S.

It's funny: although I don't have Danish ancestry that I know of, apparently, I look like a Dane. Maybe some Danish Vikings "visited" my ancestors at some point? [grin] When I was in Denmark, I discovered that, if I kept my mouth shut and didn't knit, folks assumed I was a Dane. (If I spoke, they assumed I wasn't American because I could speak some Danish. If I knitted, they were completely baffled because I learned to knit in New Zealand, so I hold the yarn and needles differently from American or Danish knitters, probably more like the British.)

Nah, I can't see much on your LJ, most of it's Flocked, but I'd love to read that story! Perhaps you wouldn't mind emailing it to me? lissas_elves at yahoo dot co dot uk (there's a reason for the 'UK')

Ad 1) Really? I've got distant family in that area (as do most Danes, it seems).

>>Maybe some Danish Vikings "visited" my ancestors at some point? [grin] When I was in Denmark, I discovered that, if I kept my mouth shut and didn't knit, folks assumed I was a Dane.<<

*g* Those Vikings got around a bit, didn't they?

>>If I spoke, they assumed I wasn't American because I could speak some Danish. <<

Ehm, yes, about that... *blushes* We Danes tend to assume that Americans cannot speak any language but their own. Very prejudiced - I apologize! (Actually, we believe the same thing about both the Brits and the French.)

No, it's not just your paranoia; the Internet is indeed steadily becoming more user-unfriendly. (Although I think much of that is due to the ever-growing problems with Flash-delivered malware rather than the silly changes to websites).

Nah, no Internet-savvy friend, I'm afraid. Have created a copy of this journal on DW, just in case, saved over everything, but actually, I'd prefer to stay here. This is one of the very few sites that I can handle without help, which saves a great deal of time.
