So, what's on the telly?
Feb. 11th, 2010 10:21 pmNot much, lately. Even one's favourite show can become a mite boring after the umpteenth re-run. As much as I love "Stargate" - and believe me, I do - watching the same episodes over and over again just don't give me the same kick anymore. At least they should bring some old Star Trek again. Only Kabel 1 brings TNG, starting after 2 a.m in the night, and unfortunately, I've got to work in the morning, so it's a no-go. Even I need at least 6 hours of sleep on the regular basis.
At least Hungarian TV's finally showing new eps of CSI: New York. It's my favourite of the three - I really like the characters. Mum prefers CSI: Miami, but I hate Horatio Caine and his sour smile like the plague - it makes me want to throw up. I hate Ryan Wolf, too. The only character I liked was Speed, and they killed him. *shakes fist*
So, I watch the re-run of Primeval on German TV; it's not the best show I've ever seen, but at least it's different. And I get to see monsters. After long hours with my beloved pupils, monsters are truly relaxing. *g*
I'm awaiting the German premiere of "Stargate: Universe" with great skepsis. But I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Even if it's a ridiculous high school version, if they offer anything new, I'll watch it. If the creators will go the way of "Enterprise", stealing from older shows and raping well-established canon, I'll stop watching.
I watch the occasional episode of "Bones" and "Crossing Jordan" sometimes, but the practice that the wise
lhun_dweller calls "corpse porn" is usually too much for me. I don't find a show more credible, just because there's a very believable half-corpse, lying mutilated in the background on some autopsy table.
I gave "Castle" a try, mostly because of Nathan Fillion, whom I actually liked, despite the fact that I found "Firefly" crap. Well, "Castle" isn't much better, and his character is an arrogant asshole. I liked Captain Malcolm better. He was an idiot, but at least a loveable idiot.
I watched a couple of episodes of "The Immortal", but I found the series really stupid, and besides, I never liked Lorenzo Lamas, so I gave up on it. At least "Highlander" is on the re-run again, after a long break... so long that it seems all new and fresh again. And "Lois and Clark". I like "Lois and Clark". Yeah, it's stupid, too, but at least the characters are lovable... unlike in "Smallville", which I have to turn out after twenty seconds, whenever I try to give it a chance. I just can't watch those characters without gagging, sorry.
Watched the "Lost" special, before Kabel1 brought the new season, in the hope that it would help me to get what the show is all about. It didn't. So I haven't even started the new season. I never got beyond Season 1, actually. Too short attention span, most likely. Ah, well, I didn't like it too much to begin with.
What I'd like to watch would be some old-fashioned sci-fi. With spaceships and deep space exploration, and strange new worlds and new civilizations, and aliens who are more elaborate than just humanoids with various bumps on the forehead, and cultures that are more diverse than having the usual, twosome, hetero partnership...
Or I'd like to watch some old-fashioned fantasy again. Merlin is great, and I can never get enough of it. But I'd love something with Elves, or Dwarves, or other fantasy races. Or some really interesting mystery that isn't based on the next invictible evil trying to achieve world domination. That's a dead horse that has already been beaten way too much.
Okay, this turned out a bit unorganized. I must be more tired than I thought. Well, I'd better shut up now. *g*

Date: 2010-02-11 11:12 pm (UTC)I do watch quite a lot of TV, usually German, because it's the best way to keep my vocabulary alive. I humbly admit watching "Barbara Salesch" on the rare occasion that I happen to be at home at such an early hour. *g*

Date: 2010-02-12 10:52 am (UTC)Oh yes, yes, yes! So seconded! And while we're dreaming, I'll add yet more and say I hope for it to have a strong non-US influence as well since the international team was one of the things I liked best about Stargate: Atlantis. Although if we're going to be really fanciful, I'll go even farther and wish for an European production.
*headdsk* I was going to watch Castle. I shoulda known I'd forget it if I don't litter the whole apartment with sticky notes *sigh*
I barely get to watch TV nowadays, but I want to give Castle a chance if I ever remember it. Also, there'll be a new show running on 3sat Monday evenings about a psychologist. It sounds like an unusual and interesting concept and it starts at 9.15, so I'll give it a try... if I remember *lol*
I still keep forgetting Merlin and have by now given up and decided to just rent the DVD sometime.
I heard good things about Being Human, so I've been meaning to watch it on Youtube since I heard you could. But couldn't find it and then forgot about it. Since it's on Hungarian TV now, I hope it'll be on German TV soon, too.
Meh, for now, Winter Olympics will keep me busy and in March there are new episodes of House, Monk and Law & Order. But I'm yearning for some new good fantasy and sci-fi, too.

Yeah, and it's the same with books. You go crazy trying to find books which take a different spin on fantasy, so except for comedic fantay, which does still put interesting spins on the dead horse, I've mostly given up on adult fantasy. Young adult fantasy is far more imaginative and willing to try new things.

Date: 2010-02-12 04:47 pm (UTC)Castle will be on tomorrow, also at prime time, also on Kabel1, if I'm not mistaken. It's hardly worth your time, though, unless you really wanna watch Nathan Fillion in his older, beafsteak-faced version. Quite disappointing, actually.
There are no new Merlin episodes so far. RTL has shown Season 1 but hasn't started Season 2 yet.
I know what you mean about books. The most generous
I greatly admire Richard Hatch for holding up the torch for the original BSG (need I add "the one and only"?), but the sad fact is, neither he, nor his hired help can really write. The book isn't bad, the ground idea is interesting, but the writing itself is so flat it makes my eyes hurt. Fanfic authors like Karen Davies and
At least the Atlantis book has great Zelenka moments. Zelenka moments are always good. The story is decent, too until a certain point, where it gets lost in clichés. And this is one of the better Atlantis books that I've seen. It shows that most book authors aren't really fans, it's just a job for them.
Sad, really. I remember the times when there were fantastic books to Star Trek and TNG and DS9.

Date: 2010-02-12 08:57 pm (UTC)Yeah, I hate that when authors write for Tv shows they aren't even familiar with, just writing with the bare facts they're told.
