I'm just goin to bake Martinsgänse aus Hefeteig with at least two dozen 10-13-year-old girls next Tuesday. Next Wednesday is the feast of St. Martin, who was closely affiliated with geese (they gave him away when he hid in their stable, so he had to become Bishop of Tours after all, the poor sod), and who's become something of a folklore figure for German children.

Since we're a school for the German minority in our area, we're supposed to do something characteristically German on this day. Usually, there's a procession on the Castle Hill, with a guy clad as a Roman soldier (=Martinus) riding in front and lots of kids bringing lanterns and singing Martinslieder following him. In the end, they get a baked figurine that they can eat.

Now, it's always a very windy business, lousy cold and all that. So we wisely decided to do something within the school. Hence the baking. It will be great fun... if I survive, tht is. ;)

Might I suggest a dose of tranquilizers ahead of the event? ;-)

I can't Control The Situation(TM) if I'm unconscious, now can I? The amount of tranquilizers required would put an Allurian Mammooth (Star Trek version) to sleep. ;)

*g*

Oh. Well, it'll be a chance for you to practice patience. I'm sure you'll be rewarded for it one day. :-)

(I wouldn't do it for a million.)

I've just finished trial baking - I haven't made the things for fifteen years or so, so I really had to try them for myself again before facing a global disaster with the girls.

Since I don't have a goose-shaped cutter, I decided to make Martinsmänner instead: man-shaped cakes. Of course, I don't have man-shaped cutters, either, so I used a teddy bear shaped one and cut off the ears afterwards. Who'd have thought I'd become a plastic surgeon in my old days. *g*

Yeah, it will be a hard time next Tuesday, but I think we're gonna have fun. Some of the girl (boys aren't allowed, I'm not that suicidal) are really loveable. Let's pray and hope for the best. ;)

Oh I will. Perhaps more fun than I can bear, but I will. *g*

I intend to do it in three groups that should only minimally intersect, so it ought to be manageable. That, or I'm irrationally optimistic. ;)

That's very true. But I'm hopeless that way. I just love doing such things with the kids, even if I swear every time that this will be the last...

And will you play "Duck, Duck, Goose"?

All but one of the children sit in a circle. The one who is "it" walks around the circle and lightly taps each of the seated kids on the head saying, "Duck." This continues for as short or long a time as the "it" child chooses, until s/he decides to say "Goose" instead of "Duck." At that moment, the child tapped as "Duck" leaps up and chases the "it" child around the circle. If the "it" child tags (touches) the "Duck" child before the "Duck" child reaches the "it" child's empty spot, the "Duck" child becomes "it." If not, "it" remains "it" and starts around the circle again.
