Like [livejournal.com profile] noadvertising - and probably quite a few others among us - I, too, had a great deal of leftover baking ingredients from Christmas. Things like chopped pistachios, pecans and other nuts (recipes always ask for more of that stuff than you can actually use for rolling the biscuits in them or whatnot), grated orange peels in sealed packages and so on. I had also managed to buy Cremequark and whipping cream on sale that was approaching its "best before" date. And I had some crushed digestive biscuits (you can buy that stuff here ready-made, although I'm not sure how digestive they actually are) that had been standing in a jar for half a year or so.

Since I hate seeing food getting wasted (an early childhood spent in poetic poverty can do that to a person), I decided to make an improvised cheesecake - or rather Käsekuchen, which is its German cousin. So, I mixed the crushed biscuits with the chopped nuts for the cake base. Used the whipping cream, the Quark and the orange peels for the filling. And lo and behold! an extremely yummy little cake was born. We ate half of it on the spot, and the other half will be gone tomorrow, I'm sure.

I also made lunch: baked fish with polenta and a mixed salad. Aldi has very good frozen fish filets in bread crumbs, the kind you can bake in the oven without additional fat; it's also a lot softer than if fried in a pan, which is important for Mum. Aaaand I'd found some wonderful Spanish raspberries on sale, also at Aldi. We both love raspberries, and these were ripe and sweet, which is surprising. These imported ones usually lack the right taste, but these were excellent. So, we indulged quite a lot today. Unfortunately, I still don't know what to cook tomorrow, but one can't have everything, right?

Aside from kitchen duty, which ate most of the day, I even managed to do a bit of sewing. Half of the quiet book pages are now seamed, which is good. The other half still needs to be done, which is not so good. But I'm optimistic about getting this project finished by the end of the month. *fingers crossed*

Oh, and we had laundry day, too! Joy!
