Früchtebrot, oh my!
Mar. 20th, 2021 08:27 pmI had a lot of nuts and dried and candied fruits left over from the Christmas baking frenzy, some of them nearing their "best before" date. So I looked up a recipe in which I could use them up and found one for Früchtebrot on the chefkoch.de website. It's something similar to the fruit cake known to British and American people - similar yet not identical.
So I gave it a try. It was a lot of chopping and marinating and the likes, and the dough turned out extremely rich and heavy. After I've baked it, I ate one slice and realized that:
a) it was way too hard for Mum to eat, even if I cut away the crust of her slice (which was paper thin), and
b) we won't be able to ate the entire cake. Ever.
So I quartered the thing and gave one quarter to each of our next-door neighbours. Then I phoned my friend Evie and asked her if she'd like to have the third quarter of the cake. Fortunately, she was eager to have it - she likes Früchtebrot very much. So she'll drop by tomorrow and fetch her quarter of it. I'm hopeful that we'll manage the rest somehow.
I'm a bit disappointed, though. The ingredients were varied and delicious (and not cheap), one could have expected a better cake as a result. Fortunately, other people will profit from all that slave labour; I'll be more careful with my shopping next time. *sigh*
