Finally got around to watch Pitch Black on German TV. Wasn't particularly impressed. Firstly, the story didn't have a true plotline. We never learned why they had to crash land on that frigging planet. We never knew what sort of planet that was to begin with, never got any real info on the monsters, only that they were, well, monstrous, and wanted to eat the poor characters. And good riddance, too.

But what disgusted me most was the semi-glorification of Win Deasel's character, who was a cold-blooded murderer. That half the harmless guys and the religous folks had to die, but he got to save the day and be admired by that little boy. Bleh.

Bought Kingdom of Heaven on video but haven't watched yet. Still waiting for a special state of mind for that one.

Watched Extraterrestrial on German TV yesterday. It's practically a documentation about computer simulations that NASA and other scientists made to model alien biotops. It was very interesting.

The first world that they virtually created was Blue Moon, and Earth-like moon circling around a Saturn-type gas giant, in a binary system. They gave the planet a very dense atmosphere, with more than 30°oxygen, and worked from that starting point on. The result were flying whales, plankton that floated in the atmosphere, so-called pagoda trees that stored water in their bowl-shaped leaves and were a kilometer high, and so on. I found the flying predators a bit too clumsy, but all in all, they worked out the closing circles of life very cleverly, including the regular forest fires, due to the high oxygen percentage.

The first virtual planet was called Aurelia and placed in the orbit of a red dwarf star. That was a completely different biotope, with trees that were actually animals, large, predatory, emu-like birds who represented the top of the food chain and had really interesting organs, small amphybial creatures that could unite to a super-organism and even leave the water to hunt.

The guys commenting the simulations said that such worlds were actually possible. Well, I don't know if it's true, but I enjoyed the cleverness in their creation a great deal.

I hope you will post after you watch Kingdom of Heaven and say what you thought of it. I really adore the movie, but I have had a dickens of a time getting anyone else to watch it.

I will. Actually, I'm waiting for a former student of mine, who also wants to see it - together, it would be more fun.

Love your icon already, BTW. The one above, I mean.
