Stupid is as stupid does
Jul. 20th, 2023 08:36 pmMeaning my not-so-humble self. I'd love to blame the heat for the non-existence of any higher brain functions, but the sad truth is that I have a memory like a sieve - and I'm hopelessly perfectionist.
Stupid act #1: I've decided to type up and post some random scenes to the Birthright series (my decades-old Andromeda AU), so that they would be available, even if the stories themselves are not even written yet. Now, I had the vague memory that some of those scenes (the longest ones) should already exist as Word documents. I've gone through my HD with the fine-toothed comb: nothing. So I admitted defeat, bit into the sour apple and typed them up. Again, as it proved today, when I found aforementioned document... on my geriatric laptop, while looking for something else.
Which shows how old these scenes actually are. I haven't worked on that laptop for years, literally, except playing Solitaire and reading fanfic that I saved to its HD. Ah, well. At least I did some refining and renamed a character, so it wasn't entirely in vain. And it gave me the illusion of writing, which is important during a
picowrimo season.
Stupid act #2: Weeks ago, I wanted to use a felt item left over from a former project for the last page of my songbook project. Originally a pair of tracks, I recycled it for a fence. Only that I cut it horizontally, thinking it would work better that way. It did not. So I reattached the upper part, working on the whole dratted part for days... with questionable results. I consulted Mum who meant it would work as it was, therefore I left it that way. Today I took out the page again and was shocked by how ugly and clumsy and altogether ill-fitting it was. So I took out my sewing scissors and undid all the stitches (literally hundreds of them) and threw away the misbegotten piece.
Yes, I know, I could have left it that way. It was a background piece, and after having added the parts in the foreground, about 20% of it would have been visible... or less. But I just couldn't live with the thought to give someone a gift that had such ugly parts. So I'll have to redo the fence from the scratch tomorrow. *sigh*
Not much else happened. We put the last of the china back to its proper place, I laid out the lolly sticks that will need to be painted in various colours for later use (several dozens of them), made a quick lunch of scrambled eggs and a salad, and we generally tried to survive the heat while vegetating in front of the telly. I tried to call six different people - not a single one answered the phone. Out of sight, out of mind, I guess.
