... to the dear the_wild_iris, who hasn't been hanging out on LJ for quite some time but at least can be reached via phone. So I sent a text message and even got an answer, which is a relief. Unfortunately, long-distance phone calls are so dratted expensive that I had to opt against an actual call. :(

Other than that, we had our cleaning frenzy today, ate leftovers and I chatted to H. on the phone. Same old, same old. We still have strong winds, so the flat is several degrees colder than in the depth of winter, despite the sunny weather. The heating got switched off nearly two weeks ago, and we're wearing more layers than in December. I don't even dare to imagine how could it would be without the insulation they had done a year and a half ago...

This spring is a strange one- too wet, too cold. Due to the occasional family visits we had, hubby was not able to turn the heating off as often as he would have loved. And I did not need to bring back out the warm clothes...

Communal heating is unusual in the UK. Each property tends to have it's own, so turning on the radiators is easy. As I write this, my boiler is rumbling away, trying to bring this room up to a comfortable temperature.

This system was established decades ago, when they built these huge estates full of ten-storey concrete buildings. In our building alone there are more than 200 flats, and there are dozens of such buildings all around. These estates sprang up on the outskirts of every larger city back in the 1970s, for people with little money who needed a place to live. Later on we could actually buy our flats, but the centralized system remained in operation.

As long as we do something that requires movement it isn't that bad. But for old people like Mum who sit around a lot it is quite cold indeed.

The house is always a bit too cold for me, even when the weather is warm outside. Both my husband and my son like the A/C set on the cool side, at least for my taste. So, I have to layer even in the full summer.
