Today I was baking - mostly because I had leftovers that needed to be used up before going bad. So I made cheesy fingers - basically short, craker-like... things, to use up some excellent Emmenthaler cheese. I usually make these things with yeast dough, but I didn't have any yeast left and didn't feel like going out into the insane wind for just that. So I made a different recipe that uses baking powder. Well... I don't like the results. Mum says they're good, so at least she'll have something to nibble on. I won't make a big dent into that tray of crackers.

Originally I made them because there was a chance that my cousin might visit us tomorrow, but so far he hasn't called. This is the second time within the week that he forgets to ring us; I'm getting royally pissed. If someone is so forgetful, they ought to have a notebook, dammit!

I also made a rather impromptu cheesecake - again, there was cream and butter to use up. Without measuring too carefully, I just threw together the cake base and then the topping, and out of the oven came the world's ugliest cheesecake, ever. I'd like to say that at least it tastes heavenly; unfortunately, it doesn't. It isn't bad, per se - just... blah. A shame for the wonderful quark, just as the crackers were a shame for the wonderful Emmenthaler. This just wasn't my week baking-wise. *sigh*

More luck did I have with crafting. I've managed to bind Baby Book #3, with just one minor mistake: I had to extend the inner binding because of not having measured it correctly. But that was easily done, and I wrestled the pages into obedience. Book #3 is now resting and waiting for the glue to harden. I hope to find it still in one piece tomorrow morning, but with my luck lately I don't dare to be overly optimistic.

On the writing front the main action happened during last night, around 1am, when I got a sudden idea and wrote half a page. I added a single sentence today, to make sure that I have written something during daytime, too, but that's all.

Ilike, one of my (now also retired) colleagues phoned today and we had a long chat, which was nice. I just hope my cousin didn't try to ring us during those 40 minutes.

Oh, and poor Mum managed to sleep in a weird position and has temporarily ruined her right hand. In the morning she couldn't even make a fist, let alone grab things. Now the use of the hand has more or less returned on its own, it just still hurts like crazy. We're using Diclac Dolo salve to keep the pain on a bearable level. *pets Mum*

Poor mum! I remember my mother doing the same thing- the older she got, the longer it lasted, until the pain went away! Sending good vibes to your mum!

We all have days like that. :)

I hope your Mum's hand feels better very soon!

Sorry the baking experiments didn't work out.
Mine did, thankfully. We had sultanas that had to go and I made my recipe for marble cake without the chocolate part and threw in the sultanas and chocolate chips. Yum!

They are not bad, you know, just — boring.
Yours sounds good, though. Do you make the marble cake with baking powder or entrust the eggs to make the dough rise on their own?

She does feel a bit better already. That salve worked wonders, obviously. Let's just hope that the effect will last.

It's odd the way that we can suddenly have a bad baking day or two; last week I made scones that didn't rise well and, the same day, a chocolate cake that developed a horizontal split internally and fell apart when cut. Both being things that I make regularly with no problems.

Yeah, I know, and we can't do anything against it. Yeast dough can be particularly evil that way.

Poor mum! The hand thing sounds awful. I had a baking treat yesterday; my 90+ aunt sent along some Salzstangen for me. 90+ and she has the energy to bake! I barely have the energy to cook!

Why do the best writing ideas always come just as you start to fall asleep? I've taken to keeping a notebook and pen at the bedside.

IKR? I do the same; but again, I always write out everything by hand first.
