Telly woes

Or TV - or a remote, it's hard to tell which one - is still acting up. Mum was seriously upset this morning that she might not attend to Mass, but fortunately, at the umpteenth attempt (and after having removed and reinserted the batteries of the remote several times) the telly deigned to switch on. Why don't they have an on/off taste on these things just in case the remote gives up its spirit is beyond me!

We called the techie, but he won't be able to come any sooner than after February 15. I assume they have a family vacation or whatnot, since he's been retired for years and only does work for old customers. If the telly (or the remote) keeps on acting up, tough, I'll be forced to call another techie. Not so much for me, I've got my DVDs and the Internet, but for Mum the telly is very important. Her eyesight is too weak to read more than the absolutely necessary things, she can't go out, so yeah, the telly is needed.

Other than that, we had a quiet day. I did some crafting, even wrote a few paragraphs, made a food run... that sort of day. Tomorrow it'll be monster cleaning again, so a relatively calm day before the storm was a blessing.

Sometimes there's a panel on the TV that flips open showing the hidden buttons, or they put them in an odd place, like on the top edge of the TV (out of sight.) Maybe try frisking the the thing?

Oh no, I hope the remote/TV can be repaired!

I've tried. I failed. Save for taking apart the thing with an axe I don't know what else I could do.

So do I. These are small annoyances in the face of everything else that is going on in the world, but sometimes small things can truly ruin your day.

Ours doesn't seem to have any real on/off switch either. The previous one had one on the back but even that has now disappeared. I do hope it can be sorted as I know my mother would have been equally distressed if she hadn't been able to watch things on TV.

Here's to hoping this is just a small fix, and it holds out until your tech guy can take care of it. I know my mother would be distressed about losing the TV as well. She can and does use the internet, but not to the same extent as TV.

I hope your remote keeps working. That's a pain when they aren't.

Oh no! I hope you can sort this out sooner. Have you tried fresh batteries?

I hope your TV repair is simple when it happens. I would suggest buying a universal remote, in case it's that which is your problem. But it will probably arrive at the same time as your tech guy, so it's not worth trying.

I found the on/off button on the backside of my TV, but only when hubby had installed the new one. I, too, had thought there´d be none. It did not help much, though, because,as the name says, it´s an on/off button, and nothing more. And since the remote was already in the bin we bought a new one, and the old TV lived a long life in son´s cellar. Maybe it´s the contacts of the batteries in the remote which malfunction, because the batteries are defect and have leaked. Have you tried to clean them with a cotton bud?

It is such a stupid thing, not having an on/off switch! Just because the younger generation likes to do everything by remote... But our age group doesn't count, I guess. *sigh*

I think it's something about the spring feather not holding the batteries tightly enough, but I can be wrong, of course. *sigh*

Especially without a manual on/off switch on the telly. :(

They haven't leaked, but I suspect that the spring feather (if that's what the wire spiral is called?) has become too weak to keep them in place. We'll see.

An on/off button would suffice, as everything else happens via the remote of the mediabox (which, unlike the old one, doesn't have an on/off button, either), but I couldn't find one. The back of the telly is smooth like a baby's backside.

Plus I haven't got the faintest where I could get a universal remote.

I get that they think we don't need one, but sometimes their little plastic remotes don't work!

They should let me decide if I need one or not! It's the same as computers no longer having Reset buttons.

Ugh! Can you watch shows together online? Mom and I watch youtube channels together quite often.

Mom has what I consider to be a HUGE flat screen TV. It's at least 4 feet across. She bought it on sale and it is some sort of Amazon Fire device. Since non of us is clever enough to get it synched with the cable programming it only accesses what can be accessed online. At first I felt guilty about that but then it occurred to me that I wasn't the one who bought a specialized TV. Turns out there's plenty to be found online and on youtube specifically to watch.

I'm too technically challenged to do that, I'm afraid.
