Not a successful day...

... to put it mildly. TBH, I pretty much wasted it. *sigh*

As I'm getting tired of Kansas 2 after 31 finished chapters (54 are in the planning), I was considering taking a break from it. That usually means either I pick up one of my other never-ending WIPs, or start another story, in the vain hope that it would be something short, for a change.

As a rule, this is the situation when I get started on one of the unfilmed Star Trek story ideas that I found in some background books. They are very handy: the story is already laid out, usually even divided into five acts and a prologue, one knows the characters and their peculiarities, and so on. Sometimes I even manage to write one under 10 chapters!

Thus, since I was in self-destructive mode today, I decided that I'll start one to get some distance between me and the Crossover from Hell (= Kansas 2). Only to realize that I've already written the really good ones (like Terminus, The Crystal Skull, The Immunity Syndrome, Blood and Fire, Blood and Ice and so on). The remaining four are... problematic at best (because there is one I don't even consider to touch). I gave the most promising one some thought, but wasn't able to think of any good opening scenes, so I put it away again.

Unfortunately, research and related stuff cost me all morning. And then I wasted the early afternoon with peeling the coating off from half a dozen CDs, just because I wanted to show something done at the end of the day. Because I didn't feel like working on the last little mermaid, and cooking a quick lunch really isn't such an accomplishment.

In the late afternoon we were invited over by our neighbour who had her name day recently (she's called Anna). We had a nice enough visit, save that Mum always gets a headache because neighbour lady talks a lot and rather loudly. Other than that, she's a really helpful and reliable and kind neighbour - just a bit stressing as company.

We also had very mild raind most of the day, but that's okay. The balcony can handle mild rain. It made the air too humid for my comfort, but at least cooled down the area.

You're a pensioner - you don't have to be productive if you don't feel like it.

I know that... in theory. I still feel guilty for not using the time I finally have the way I always wanted to, though.

What is a "name day"?

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2019-08-02 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know the English equivalent. It is the feast of one's patron saint. St. Anna's day is July 26, so people called Anna have their name day then.

Oh! I can't believe I didn't know about that! My daughter's middle name is Ann as in Saint Ann but her first name Is Freya after the norse goddess. None of that matters tho because she has decided she wants to change her name to Josh Dane. A guys name. It's in style at her age to be "gender fluid". I'm sorry but I still call her Freya Ann.

Do you have cake and celebrate on your name day like you would on your birthday?

Some people do. In our family, we just gave small presents. In my case it's a moot point anyway, as my official name day is on Christmas Eve and is overshadowed by the holiday anyway.

Oh, how sweet. Too bad you don't really get to have yours, tho.

It sounds like a nice day even if you didn't get to the writing you had aimed for. I wouldn't call it a wasted day, though, research (and figuring out that an idea won't work for you, preferably BEFORE you start writing) is all part of the process, too.

True. I'd just like to get to the other parts of the process, eventually.
