Who-hooo!
Sooo, I got sparkly shinies from
the_wild_iris again. She's the main force among the forces that see that I'd get thoroughly spoiled with Good Entertainment(TM), despite the fact that I live under a rock. I got Dr. Who Series 3 from her (New Who, with Tennant), and now my collection is complete. You'd think that isn't important - and it isn't, not for normal people. I, however, am a collector, and having something complete makes me very, very happy.
Consequently, I indulged in a litle Doctor-watching yesterday and today, despite the presence of Rose. I'm learning to ignore her, even if it's hart, because she's so much like Gwen from TW that it hurts. Anyway, first impressions:
The Christmas Invasion
This is the second time I saw that episode, and the end of it makes me outraged every time I as much as think of it. My extended thoughts can be read in a teeny littel ficlet, over at
otherworlds_lib, unless you like Ten. In that case, you should really avoid it, because Tosh doesn't pulls her punches when she gives him a piece of her remarkable mind.
New Earth
Now, that one I liked very much. Mostly because the Cat Nuns who were fantastic. I wonder whether they're related to the Cat from Red Dwarf - in which case I understand why they vowed celibacy. Anyway, the core problem was interesting, and I enjoyed the reunion with the Face of Boe and with Lady Cassandra. Her hopping from one host body to another was a bit stupid, but all in all, it was a good episode. I particularly liked the end. It was touching.
Tooth and Claw
Gah, it was stupid. Seeing the Torchwood Estate was interesting for me, as I've come backways, from TW to DW, but the rest of it - gosh, just no. Rose's stupidity was particularly grating - she drags that poor maidservant out of the cupboard, confidently telling her that they'll be safe... and WHAMMM, they're captured ten seconds later. That action would have made Gwen Cooper proud. And the ending, the whole warped logic of it... stupid, stupid, stupid!
School Reunion
Good story, cheap monsters, fantastic Sarah Jane Smith, and I liked how Rose fell on her stupid face, learning that she's not the first and most likely not the last companion of the Doctor. That she's nothing special (no matter what the Confidential interviews might try to make us believe), just one in a long line, and not even a particularly bright one. Loved that! Oh, oh, and the episode had ANTHONY STEWART HEAD as the baddie, which is the surest thing to WIN in my books.
The Girl in the Fireplace
Loved this one. It was very touching, and the actress who played Madame de Pompadour was both stunningly beautiful and very good at her job. Liked the whole idea with the time windows and how they worked differently in the corresponding times - finally a bit true sci-fi that I sometimes really miss in this universe. And the robots with their carnival masks were very scary.
Up to face the Cybermen next.

From what I recall (I haven't seen these recently) School Reunion and The Girl In the Fireplace are the best episodes of that season. Sarah Jane is wonderful - and as you enjoyed that episode it might be worth you watching The Sarah Jane Adventures. Even though it is made for children the real difference it makes is having stories made of two or more episodes of 15 minutes rather than single episode stories. The other main difference being that it is all on Earth - however, it doesn't seem like the show is dumbed down (much), and more of the stories seem to have interesting content than Torchwood because it doesn't have the focus on the characters screwing up to cause the problems.
By the way, the last episode of this season is the first episode I ever saw, as a friend was visiting when it was on (initial broadcast) and wanted to see it, then I wanted to see more and ended up seeing a few random episodes before the start of the next season.
