Troy
Yep, finally got around to see the movie on Hungarian TV. Gah, was it bad. Not necessarily because of the differences to mythology - honestly, I didn't miss the stupid gods who manipulated the life of men like chess pieces. And Sean Bean as Odysseus was great. I even liked Orlando Bloom as Paris - a lot more than as Legolas, to be perfectly honest. And I absolutely loved Hector, whoever the actor was who played him.
But, oh God, Brad Pitt!!! The quintessence of godawfulness on two legs. Not only did he look like a complete moron, he couldn't act a bit, either.
Now, I readily admit that I'm biased - I hate that guy with the passion of a thousand burning suns. I haven't seen him in one thing where I could have endured him. But as Achilleus, he truly reached a new level of badness.
Feel free to throw rotten tomatoes at me. *g*

The movie had Hollywood's fingers all over it and not in a good way.

And I couldn't help but howl with laughter every time I saw Brad Pitt's horrible hairdo. That fact took out much of the drama for me. *g*

What bothered me was the fact that all of a sudden, the whole war seems to last only a few weeks, at best... *if* so long. Huh? Hadn't there been a few years of siege, first? And where was Cassandra? Or the whole Artreidean legend? I want Agamemmnon slain at home by Klytemnestra, his dear wife! I always rooted for the woman, after all!

I admit that at first I've mistaken Briseis for Cassandra. My mythology knowledge has become really rusty since I switched from Ancient times to the Middle Ages due to heavy Tolkien infatuation. *g*
Perhaps it helped me that I've heard so many bad things about the movie, that I decided to see it as an independent piece of fantasy rather than anything related to Greek mythology. But even so, it was fairly bad in my eyes. Although Orlando was a lot prettier with his natural dark hair (again, for me).

Well, I like the wig, especially on my Elf. ;) But I like him with his own dark hair, too. Did you see him in Kingdom of Heaven and in Elizabethtown? Yum! And he learned to act, in the meantime; as bad as critics said that Elizabethtown was, I liked him there.
I also liked him in the last part of POTC, where he had some real charisma. That guy needed to get a few years of experience and age under his belt before he could be more than just mostly pretty; but in the end, he managed.

I saw the first part of POTC, but frankly, I found the movie not half as good as other people. It was too silly for my taste. But I'm a person of weird tastes, so it probably doesn't say anything.

Paris didn't bother me so much, mostly because I've already hated the character in mythology, so there wasn't much room for improvement in the hatred factor anyway.

Orlando Bloom...lukewarm at best. Paris just didn't do anything for me. He's always seemed like such a weak character in this whole saga. I mean, the guy seriously needed to get a clue!
This is the only thing I've seen Eric Bana in as well. He was OK but it didn't make me want to run out and see more. Loved Sean Bean (so I'm a big fan :-) Most of the 'grown up' actors did a good job with their material, so I thought on the whole it was worth watching, but yeah, the historical inaccuracy was annoying.
Kingdom of Heaven will tweak your historical accuracy buttons as well! But in that, I think Orlando Bloom did a fairly good job. Loved Liam Neeson and David Thewlis. Marton Czokas is even good in a very yucky sort of way. I guess I have a thing for older men. Orlando just doesn't do anything for me in general...

I'm not a movie-goer myself, so I only get to see them when they finally hit German or Hungarian TV. For Troy, it wouldn't have been worth the ticket price, I think.
Sean Bean rocks. He was great in everything I've seen him so far (we'll gracefully forget about Lady Chatterley, which was not his fault). And Márton Csókás (he's actually a Hungarian and proud of it, and we're ready to bask in reflected honour, hehehe) is an interesting actor. He was completely miscast as Celeborn, IMO, but he's an interesting one.

I thought the rest of them did really well within the constraints of the script.
p.s. Brad Pitt was awful, did I mention that? This was the first movie I'd seen him in since 7even (or whatever it is), and I would continue to treat him as much of a Reason To Not See A Movie as I do Tom Cruise. Actually, I saw Ocean's Eleven, but I phased him out (and didn't like it anyway).

At least for me. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings who likes him, but he could make me crawl out of my own hide. Just like Tom Cruise.
