So, science snobbery

It happens, you know.

It manifests itself in people who're good at maths and like it looking down at people who aren't good at it and don't like it.

It manifests itself in comments like Dr McKay's in SGA that "soft" sciences are not to be taken seriously.

It manifests itself in the nonverbal suggestions that people who are good at chess and like it are somewhat superior to those who aren't and don't.

So, if I hate maths, don't think that 2x2 must always, necessarily result 4 and find chess pretentious and boring, does it mean that I'm an inferior person?

On a completely different matter, I think I'm going to trim my friendslist again. I don't see why I should care for people who don't give a shit about me while otherwise still active on LJ.

I give an "ahem " about you!

I know that, my friend! *hugs* You are just not around very often. I mean the people who are around and still don't care. Mum and I often speak about you; the memories of our meeting are very dear to us. :)

Chess is a bit of a mystery to me, albeit a not very interesting one (except in my beloved Alice books, to be fair)... mind you, I have a mind singularly devoid of logic and precision and am quite happy about it :)

Likewise. I'm a bit anal-retentive when it comes to my habits and the arrangement of my room (mostly because I have so little living space), but my mind, that is a free and unlimited thing.

Hi, still alive! Life has been crazy, sorry I have been away from the net for a while. I can't play chess to save my life, I never learned, and I have no desire to!

I know the very basics: like which moves are allowed by which figures, but that's basically it. I don't know why it's considered the ultimate touchstone of human intelligence.

You got me beat - I don't even know that.

But we both know how to bake wonderful cakes, so there! Much more important than stupid chess and doesn't make people hate you when they lose. *g*

Take a look at my newest entry: cake can be admired there!

oh THOSE people. So much fun, they are.
They never watched Bill Nye's tv show when they were growing up so what do THEY really know about science, eh?
Therefore, nobody has to pay any attention to what THEY say.
^_^

Tic-tac-toe is more my 'speed' than chess. Still need to think strategically but it's a quicker game.
i'm ok at Math but that's only because my mother's college degree is Math and she taught it for a few years. (Nothing inspires learning like the dreaded 'red pen of correction' :)

Mum studied maths, too, and she's got an excellent mind for numbers. Me, I fail at basic multiplication, strategic thinking is totally alien for me and can hardly remember my own birth date or phone number. I still don't consider myself an inferior being because of that.

I can make 2+" =5 so I agree completely.

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2016-05-11 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering the endless number of parallel realities, I'm fairly sure that there must be one where 2+2 doesn't equal 4. People just don't have any imagination.

Humans excel at finding things to be snobbish about! You'd think we'd make better use of our time...

Yeah, the amount of stupidity surrounding me both in RL and cyberspace often drives me to the verge of deaspair.
