Linz, Day Three

Today the heat wave reached Linz, too. Hurrah - well, not really. Nonetheless, intrepid women as we are, we mar head out in the morning to find the cloister of contemplative Carmelite nuns which whom I staked 30-some years ago for a few days. And we found it! Go figure! Of course, we couldn't just have a chat with the sister I used to know (assuming she's still alive), that's just Not Done in such convents, but seeing such a simple chapel after the ungodly number of baroque monstrosities we've seen in these 3days was a delight.

After that, we tried to find small gifts to the grandchildren of Mum's friends... and failed. I wish they were girls. It's easy to find a gift for a 3-year-old girl: if it's pink and has to do something with a Princess (or a kitten, or a pony), you can't fail. Unfortunately, both little monsters are boys. By the time we gave up for the day we were fairly dead and in desperate need of coffee, so we went to the baker's we had discovered yesterday. The lady at the counter was happy to see us again ad we ate some delicious cake with red currant filling to our coffees.

Having tanked new energy via caffeine, we went to see the New Dome, which is a pretty New Gothic building with amazing stained glass windows. Apparently, it took 62 years to build it, and it has room for twenty thousand (!!!) people. Clearly, the people of Linz don't believe in doing things by halves.

By then we were ripe for a break, so after a quick glance at the pharmacy, church and hospital of the Merciful Brothers we returned to our hotel.

In the afternoon, we went to see the Landhaus (the seat of the local government), which has a nice, arched courtyard with a fountain. It also has a church, another baroque monstrosity, since it was built where the cloister of the Minorites used to stand. Then we went to see an old baker's shop, with a beautiful shop window, the frame of which is carved of black wood. From there we made a detour to the Parrish church oh the city, which was nearby... and very baroque again, unfortunately.

As the last part of our daily schedule, we boarded the tram #1 and rode it from one terminus to another. We do this in each new city, with several tram or bus lines. It's the cheapest way of sightseeing, and it gives you a fairly good idea of the size of the place. Well, let me tell you: Linz is BIG.

You two are intrepid! The tram or bus line exploring is a very good idea. I hope the heat wave doesn't last.

It will get much worse before we leave, I am afraid, but we are used to travelling in such weather, since I am bounf to school holidays.

Yeah, the things they would probably like we simply can't afford.

It sounds exhausting, but wonderful. Shame the heatwave has now reached Linz.

The whole Middle-Europe is practically boiling. We were lucky we had at least two cooler days.
