It was a dark and stormy night...

Quite literally. It started with strong winds, lightning and thunder and continued with heavy, heavy rain. As expected, the balcony yielded to the power of nature - there were at least two litres of rain water in the bucket that is the last station of my catastrophe prevention system. In fact, the rain even came in under the windows, which never happened before!

Still, there was no real damage - except for the total lack of sleep, which left us both completely flattened for today. I did a bit of work on the baby book (deadlines don't care about sleepless nights), we decided to leave the rest of the stuffed kohlrabi for tomorrow and just ate soup for lunch and basically slept in front of the telly.

My friend Evie called in the middle of this vegetating, and we discussed the stormy night. She lives in a small house on top of a hill and was fairly scared at some points. Fortunately, her garden didn't get damaged, although the entrance to the ground level of the house stood under water. Not enough to get into the house, though, so that's good.

H. (the grandmother of Little Emma) called, too. She's down with a fairly bad cold (again), which Emma caught from some play-mates and generously shared with the rest of the family. The kids are over it already; H. on the other hand, is not. It's strange how toddler germs can knock grown people out.

Could have been worse, when you see what happened in Slovenia and Austria.
Summer 2023 is weird

I know. I'm just sick and tired of worrying about the dratted balcony.

Little kids are little germ magnets.

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2023-08-05 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
And they are happy and willing to share. *g*

We had a stormy night last night — the wind and rain kept waking me — but nothing as bad as yours. I'm glad that at least your bucket held as the last line of defence.

We've been waiting for over two years for someone to fix the dratted balcony. *grrrrrrrrrr*
But yeah, as long as the bucket does its duty, we manage.

Worst thing with leaks is that you will begin to worry each time the rain starts, no matter if it's a drizzle or a downpour.
Condolences to Emma's grandma, I feel with her! Matthäus had not been at the toddler group because of an eye infection. When he came to us, he was officially healed, so his parents said. When they left, his mother thought one of his eyes a tad red again. Now guess who has also caught the eye inflammation...

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2023-08-05 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That's very true about the leaks. We've been traumatized by this balcony for years — I was still working when it started, and we had various craftsmen take a look... and fail to find it. We so hoped that the insulation work would put an end to it, and to an extend it did: now we have one leak instead of several ones. Still, it is so frustrating!

Unlike you, Heidi has "only" four grandchildren, but two of them live in the same house, full time, so the chances of getting their gems are unlimited.

Problem is that we are getting older and seem to pick up germs by looking at a sick child only.

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2023-08-06 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
And it takes us much longer to get over it than it takes for the little monsters. I've just spoken to Heidi — needed to check something in a recipe for Königsberger Klopse — and the poor thing still can't even speak properly. Sore throat, coughing and other joys, collected from Little Emma, who's perfectly fine again, of course.

Oh wow, so much water.

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2023-08-06 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was a bit shocked when I checked the bucket in the morning.

I hate strong winds, they always give me a level of anxiety:(

I'm glad that you and your friend Evie got through the storm OK

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2023-08-06 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. We live in a 10-storey concrete monstrosity, but even so, it was a bit frightening. I'm glad Evie had her daughter visiting at that time — being alone in a small house atop a hill isn't funny by such weather.

Wow! That sounds like quite the weather event. Up here, in the north of England, we dodged the bullet of a big storm yesterday. I hope it fizzles out before it reaches the continent. Your balcony needs time to dry out.

It is so annoying that they won't send someone to fix it, after more than two years!
