I only ever learnt to crochet single strands; I know in theory how one is supposed to continue, having watched a friend of mine crochet patches that she stitched together to a blanket, but I never progressed that far in the 'sewing' classes in school. I did learn how to knit, and during my undergraduate years at university I knitted myself a sweater; I don't think I have knitted anything since, though!
It is very good to have things (not chores!) that take you away from what you do for work. It is one of the things I love about baking; because it isn't something I do to feed myself, like cooking, it isn't a chore, and it is very different to working at the computer or reading which is a lot of what my job tends to be for me.
