Birthday Party - The Second Coming

As you all know by now, LJ has decided to crash our birthday party - the original post is no longer visible. But some of us still had most of the comments in our inbox and decided to reconstruct the original party as well as we can, because we had great fun and the discussions were wonderful.

However, to avoid the same mishap occurring to us, we've decided to open up a second entry for further comments while working on rebuilding the original. We still have two days left, and we won't allow LJ to crash our party!

The original entry had 1328 comments, on 6 pages. The reconstructed party has now 500+ (all reposted within one day and a few new ones added), having reached Page 7 already.

Let's see what else can we come up with. New guests are welcome to share the fun. :)

Swedish television isn't good for sci-fi (or at least it wasn't when I
lived in Sweden). For example only the first season of ST:DS9 was
ever shown on the terrestrial channels. In the same way I have only ever
managed to see the first season of SG-1 in Sweden, though during
the six months I spent in Glasgow during in 2003-4 seasons five and six
were broadcast simultaneously so I have watched some of them too. My plan
is to get a DVD box set of SG-1 at some point but at the moment
the ones I have seen for sale are just more expensive than I am prepared
to pay.

I would have loved to see more of the Travellers, preferably with less of
a Sheppard love/sex twist to it. A technologically advanced race taking
to the stars makes such sense in that Pegasus galaxy and it would have
been interesting to see more of them and contrast that with the Genii. Of
course it would have been interesting to see more of the Genii culture too...

That is very strange! Did they just think that nobody was watching or
something?

Agree so much! Too much of the Genii stories seem to be just about one coup or another... It would be very interesting to see the Genii and the Travellers interact.

Oh yes, I would have loved to see that! Of course I would
have loved to see more Genii stories where they weren't so obviously
painted as the bad guys; I think their reaction to the Atlantis
expedition makes perfect sense. We did get a little of people not being
happy with how the expedition kept making decisions that affected the
entire galaxy without so much as consulting them in that episode with the
trial, but then that was 'resolved' at the end of the episode and never
mentioned again...

Yes... It is partly the tv show convention of the heroes always being
justified... hmm... getting fic ideas now - perhaps I will have to try
writing that after Yuletide... ;)

To which [livejournal.com profile] solanpolarn said:

While I have a certain appreciation for that convention, I do also find
it can be very interesting to deal with the other side and what their
justifications are. That doesn't necessarily mean that 'our heroes' are
wrong, just that the other side perhaps aren't either.

Do let me know if you do write anything in this vein; I would be very
interested to read it!

[livejournal.com profile] jenn_calaelen answered:

*nods* I really prefer things that aren't totally right or wrong, but
deal with people having different adjendas, priorities and beliefs... but
books seem to be much better for that than tv.

I will :)

Then I had my obligatory rant against macho pilots:

God I so hated the babe of the week falling for Sheppard! It's such a boring cliché - it was one with Kirk already, and going through Riker, Dylan Hunt, Sheppard and half a dozen clichéd character didn't help it at all.

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2012-10-09 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
And [livejournal.com profile] jenn_calaelen agreed:

I agree! Too many subplots of too many shows involve random
'relationships' of that sort!

[livejournal.com profile] solanpolarn about the same topic:

I did like that one episode were there was a whole team of just women --
competent women in all sorts of different roles -- and none of them fell
for Sheppard at all. Of course I don't think we ever saw that team
again...
