I think I missed this comment the first time around! I haven't actually had it happen that I have given a book away in a big clean-out and then gone looking for it; that is mostly due to me very rarely getting rid of any books at all. On the other hand I did throw away all of my undergraduate notes after finishing my Ph.D. and then within six months wishing I still had them!
