Party time again!

Hi folks! *waves*

Time is flying by, isn't it? It's that time of a year again - I'm getting older. In this case, I'm turning 55 on October 9, which used to be an important thing, back under the old regime. Women could retire at the age of 55 back then. So I've decided to ignore all that fantastic headway we've supposedly made towards democracy in the last two decades and enter my virtual retirement, blithley overlooking the fact that I'll have to work another 7 or 8 or only God knows how many years.

So, let's party! Last years virtual birthday party yielded 742 comments on 6 pages, which won't be easy to top, but we're good, aren't we? WE CAN DO IT! So, let's give it a try! In the recent years, it has always been great fun, so let's have fun again!

You're all cordially invited to help yourself to a slice of virtual Dobos Cake recipe - it's my absolute favourite, although I never managed to get it as good as my Garnny used to.

Cheers!

Note: The party will be closed on October 9, at midnight, sharp. Join us and have fun!

Oh, I'll never get tired of the world going to hell in a hand basket :P

Sadly very true! I realised lately how much of the stuff that researched for my dissertation had gone.

Conspiracies can be fun to me, but I prefer ones that at least seem to have some degree of sense to them (eg the cult of secrecy around the Stargate, then conspiracies to get control of it), not just conspiracies for the sake of evilness!

I'm quite good at keeping several alternate canons separate in my head and just blending out whatever doesn't fit in with what you're currently watching. It's a necessary skill in some of my main fandoms! XD

As for nuances, sure, I love shades of grey. But I've resigned myself to only the very rare show giving me the shades of grey I need to be happy *sigh*

Ah, Battlestar Galactica! That brings up memories! It's the first sci-fi other than Star Trek that I loved.

If nothing else, we're doing well cracking the number of total comments! XD

*g* Continuity is one of the things that I look for in shows etc - I want things to make sense and for the show to pick up things from earlier and allow the characters to develop. Possibly this is one of the reasons that there are so few tv shows that I actually love.

Totally agree!

Hm, I've never really thought about the pictures being a distraction. That's quite true, though. It's annoying when the speakers talk too fast and you have to rewind, though.

Being subversive is more interesting than just imitating the master.

I like continuity, but I'm content with fandom doing the fleshing out of characters and world as long as the "bare bones" to work with are there. Some of my fandoms are of a very light-hearted nature in canon, so all the deeper stuff has to be interpreted into them anyway.

I'll take a look at that fic!

I know. It's a big jump. It would have been better if they'd introduced it in small steps during a couple of decades. I'm sorry for you!

Thank you! *munches away*.

I watched it earlier this evening. You were right, it wasn't impressive. Though I liked the Roman charioteer stopping for a traffic light and Churchill being addressed as 'Caesar'.

Makes sense! :)

I'm not in fandom for a lot of the tv shows because I prefer to watch unspoiled and most things take a while to get here. Therefore I don't tend to end up following shows unless they give me enough of the things that I like in the show itself. :)

Me, I saw it even before Star Trek. Oh, first love... and for its time, it was actually pretty advanced. The sets and the costumes were amazing.

[identity profile] jenn-calaelen.livejournal.com 2011-10-03 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, a lot of the little bits like that were cool. I also liked Amy's train. :)

True, but we must not give up the hope that we might break both records. That way defeat lies. ;)

idk. I like his character with the quirky references to all sorts of things (plus any character singing Gilbert and Sullivan get a plus in my book) :)
and I like the fact the he is not defined by his virginity.
I fidn the end of s4 extremely sad - so hard to re-watch - yet so pointless, as if Dr Franklin had done what he had promise the woman he would have and researched the machine it could have been possible to use safely.

\o/ loads of comments certainly! And so many different conversations going on! :D

Merlin, Series 4

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2011-10-03 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Anybody seen it? What I read on tv.com sounds promising. Of course, my Epic Merlin Fic (TM) is now completely Jossed, but it doesn't matter, as long as the show's good.

Too bad Morgause seems to be back. For me, she's the most unconvincing character in the whole thing. Gwen's a Mary Sue, sure, but as they went for the Cinderella thing with her, it was to be expected. Morgause, though, could never sell me the frightening villain. She's just totally unimpressive - bad casting, I guess.

That's the best part of it - the conversations. We can discuss many different topics at the same time; when else do we get the chance to do that?

Re: Merlin, Series 4

[identity profile] jenn-calaelen.livejournal.com 2011-10-03 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
(Note this contains spoilers) ;)

I've seen the first episode (ie the only one broadcast so far).
Not too bad so far, although I'm bored of monsters that are scared of fire or force people to use fire as a weapon - why not something new?

Morgause doesn't seem to be going to be around for long as they killed her off (although she could come back in some way)...

Otherwise, it just seems to be more of the same, and as the story wasn't wrapped up in the episode it is hard to judge so far.

Re: Page 2! Yay!

[identity profile] jenn-calaelen.livejournal.com 2011-10-03 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
True! :D

Although it is also easy to lose tracks of things.

Oh, I don't mind spoilers at all. I prefer to know things in advance, in fact. But again, I'm the person who reads the ending of a book first, so...

I guess they use fire because it looks good on screen, though. ;)
Morgause killed off? Well, that's good news. Although I chose a more interesting end for her in my Epic Fic (TM). Now all I need is to actually write it, hehehe.
