Party time ahead!

Well, yes, dear folks, it's this time of the year again. The big, one-week virtual party from today to the 9th of October starts here. Come on in, be welcome, make yourself comfortable, and post a comment. May we have many collapsed threads again!

Last year we had 559 comments on 4 pages, which is an impressive record to break. But I have an excellent apple pie in the oven, and offer a virtual slice to every party guest.

Let's party!

Addition: someone asked for the apple pie recipe. Here it is, behind the cut.

400 gr wheat flour
200 gr butter or margarine
200 gr sugar
1/10 litre sour cream
1 pinch of salt
ground peel of 1/lemon
2 gr baking soda

For the filling:
2 kg apples
sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla and ground lemon peel as you like

One eggyolk for painting the top.

How to make it?
1) Make a dough from abovementioned ingredients.
2) Cut it in two equal pieces. Roll out one piece, lay it into a baking tin (baking paper under it is helpful).
3) Spread some dried bread crubms all over it.
4) Peel and plane (slice???) the apples, press out the juice with your hands (it shouldn't be too dry, though) and mix them with the spices.
5) Spread the apples over the dough.
6) Roll out the other half of the dough. Cover the apples with it.
7) Paint the top with eggyolk and bake it in a pre-heated oven, on 200°C for twenty minutes.
8) Cut it when it's cooled down.

Sorry, but I had to use the metric system. My brain doesn't work in cups and pounds and that stuff. I hope you can still figure out how much you need from the ingredients.

Addition: I also wish to gift upon my dear party guests a birthday-present, Hobbit-style: Chapter 03 - Puer Natus Est Nobis of my Cadfael fic "Sparrows" has just been posted to [livejournal.com profile] hiddenrealms and to FF.Net. Enjoy!

And the end results are: 735 comments on 6 pages! It's more than I could have dreamed of, and I thank you - all of you - who contributed to this record. It will be a hard one to break next year indeed, but I hope you'll be back. :)

Thanks again, I had a fantastic time and met great new people - it was fun!

To finally get back to doing more of the fandom meme (sorry - life ate me for a while, but I survived and am now back), so onto the other two fandoms:

1. Name 3 of your most favourite fandoms.
Babylon 5 (I know we've been talking about already, but it is where my mind is at the moment), Studio60
2. Name one character of each fandom you particularly like. Tell us why.
Babylon 5: Very hard to choose, but I'm going to say Talia - I like the way that her character develops and watching how she learns about Psi Corps and starts to question everything that she has been taught. The way that she slowly moves from accepting every that Psi Corps does is right through various steps towards being finally estranged from them. It is such a pity that she was then written out. Plus I like the way that she interacts with the station staff - the way that she is not quite and insider, but not quite an outsider, it makes it very interesting to see how she reacts differently because she doesn't know everything that is going on.
Studio60: There are so many characters that I could pick, but I think I'm going to say Suzanne. She is a minor character but has a wonderful scene in which she stands up to Matt (her boss), asking him if he is high, then goes and tells his best friend/co-boss what is going on, even though she think he might fire her for this. I like the fact that she knows what her job is and seems to remain relatively sane and keep her sense of humour while everything is crazy around her.
3. Name one character of each that you don't like. Tell us why.
Babylon 5: Sheridan: This one was an easy choice - I don't like him because he allows thinks he is right and the show mostly supports him in this. His taking over control of Babylon 5 doesn't make sense with his total lack of diplomacy in most situations and the way that his character randomly changes to make bits of plot work is annoying. Also, the fact that most of the background that his gets involves more and more ex-wives appearing is not particularly interesting, especially as it is used to create conflict between him and Delenn. [Now I'm going to stop before this turns into a total rant] :)
Studio60: Ricky and Ron - I know they are two characters, but given that they mostly appear as a pair, I think they count for one. They are annoying and mostly seem to be there to add conflict to a show that already has enough going on. As characters they are so self absorbed and seem to have no redeeming qualities - even talent.
4. If you can, recommend a piece of fanfic to each of those fandoms.
I can't think of any to rec at the moment.

Re: Character names

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is another thing I'll never forgive Ron Moore about his "reimagined" BSG - that he turned a complete cast that came from a different galaxy or galactic sector and had at least twelve different tribes/nationalities/whatever into people who all of a sudden had regular American names.

Adama, the Patriarch isn't quite the same as his bespectacled starship commander. And Lee Adama isn't quite Apollo! The gender-bent Starbuck and Boomer, of whom the latter even became an evil Cylon monster, I won't begin to speak.

Re: McQueen fanfic recs

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Let me suggest you "Moments of Joy", "Literary Giants" and "The Moving Finger Writes" for starters. They're quite long stories, usually centered around McQueen and what being an InVitro meant to him.

"Moments of Joy" is a McQueen/OFC romance, but one of the very few that I can buy without any second thoughts. "Literary Giants" follows Kylee's fate after she's been freed from Chig captivity, and McQueen's, after returning to Earth, a leg shorter.

Re: Cadfael fic

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
True, true. And I'm very glad I made you interested in Cadfael. Then you'll be probably happy to hear that I've finally finished the 3rd chapter of "Sparrows" and will try to post it on my birthday, as a hobbit-style birthday present. :)

Buffy episodes

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got most of Buffy, up to Season 5. German TV did show the later seasons indeed, and I've even taped some of them, but I graudally lost interest as all those Slayers-in-waiting invided the series. From then on, it was just not interesting enough - the main characters, for whom I used to watch it, got out of focus, and I've enough pain with teenaged snots myself than to watch them on TV, slayerettes or not.

Re: Pathways vampire AU

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It *is* fun. It's just getting increasingly complex, so that my old spreadsheats about who's related/allied/in love/in lust/in hatred with whom and who's done what aren't even working anymore. And I don't have the time and the energy to update the framework, work in dozens of new characters, connect the timeline, weave the different plotlines into one unit, and so on...

I'd need a secretary with all the time of the world and a real obsession for the stuff to order it. If you hear of one, send them to me, please.

Spike & Wesley

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I really hated what Joss did with Spike in the later seasons.

Wesley, OTOH, only became himself in Angel. In Buffy, he was just the jerk of the season, mere comic relief. I loved how Angel made him a full-fledged character, with a background and a convincing motivation, including character growth and stuff.

Unfortunately, I abandoned Angel after 2/3 of Season 2 and only watched the later seasons sporadically. Didn't very much like the direction the series took afterwards, but perhaps [livejournal.com profile] the_wild_iris can persuade you that it wasn't so bad, after all. She likes the later seasons.

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I never knew anyone from my father's side (not even my father, which, according to Mum's side of the family wasn't such a great loss), but my maternal grandfather was wonderful.

Or we could create a cosy little comm for RP-ing or Round Robin purposes and invite a few people to play with us?

I'd like to play/write Tyr, if it's all right with you. Would you be willing to do Gaheris. No, not that way, although you might get your turn with him during the plot.

I love crackfic. I write so much drama and deep character introspection and stuff as a rule, that crack is a real delight. I remember having hysterical fun writing "Special Unit 3", despite the fact that it was absolute crack.

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the spirit!

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps he did? I wouldn't put it beyond him. He knew the weirdest stuff about certain eras.

I find the names you've translated absolutely hysterical. Too bad I don't know the languages involved. Philological puns are something I enjoy greatly... I just can never share the ones made in my own language, obscue one as it is.

Re: What about Poltergeist: The Legacy?

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a real shame. It was an excellent series, one, I think you'd have enjoyed greatly. If I could, I'd buy the DVDs of all seasons, especially the early ones with Father Callahan in it (I think it run four or five seasons, I'm not entirely sure), but they're not available over here. All I have are a few random episodes, taped with German dubbing from TV, and not very good quality, either. ;(

Re: Happy Birthday!

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yum, we have something like this, called - for some weird reason - "bird's milk". My granny used to make it excellently, also without any alcohol... as a child I could have drowned in it. Still like it a lot, but never found a version quite as tasty as Granny's.

Would you mind visit me and introduce me to your version? ;)

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
You can, obviously. And it's a great success!

Page 4, at least!

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
We've done it, folks! Page 4 has been reached! If I'm not mistaken, this is primary comment #3 - only 22 more to go, and we still have two full days.

The comment nummer record we've already broken - go us!

Re: Happy birthday

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't mention books! I've bought six new books today in a second-hand bookshop! They are all part of the excellent history series "The Making of the Past", of which I already had some 12 volumes - now I only lack one more, and I'll have the complete set!

Of course, the family will live off of three-day-old bread and water after this action, but still...

That sounds like a silly decision and a bad way to not use easy ways to showing origins etc. I don't think I've seen any of either version of the show, so don't know about the rest.

Yay for breaking the comment number record! :)

Great party!

Sheridan: This one was an easy choice - I don't like him because he allows thinks he is right and the show mostly supports him in this.

Boy, don't I agree! I was sooo annoyed when stupid JMS got rid of Sinclair, who was an intriguing, complex character, and brought in Sheridan, who's, basically, the same annyoing type as Kirk. Or Riker. Or Dylan Hunt. Or John Sheppard. The same cocky pilot type who can do anything and can get away with it, without bearing the consequences, and gets to decide in big questions that aren't his frigging business, just because he's the Big American Hero (TM).

The ex-wives were really annoying, too. And despite what one might think of Lochley: to choose her as the commanding officer of B5, despite that she'd fought for the other side, based on the fact that they were married? Hello? Didn't that happen after having too much booze or whatnot? A truly thought-out and responsible choice, eh?

Rant away. The wasted potential about Delenn could make me scream and break things every time I consider how JMS has practically ruined a potentially fantastic character. Making her the bossy wife. Or the whiny wife. Or the flabbergasted wife. Whatever.

I'm sorry that I don't know your other fandom. Haven't even heard of it before, in truth. Is it a British series?

Great guests! :))

I learned a great deal about my old fandoms and about new ones I've never heard of before, and books and music and food... a very pleasant experience indeed.

Eeeep, talk about complicated!

Maybe it'd be easier to handle if you just write one-shots or shorter stories for these new characters and different plots rather than try to fit it all into one or two big stories?

I know exactly what you mean when you say writing crack is a delight! That's part of the reason I love these robots I RP so much. They're both dumb as bricks, but it's such a nice change for once! Whenever I set out writing a light-hearted original story, it ends up being dark and serious, I just can't help myself! I end up giving even the comical characters angsty storylines (although characters on the verge of comedy and tragedy or psychopathy are sooo much fun to write, they're one of my guilty pleasures.)

Yeah, you're welcome to have Tyr :) And I'll do Gaheris, in this way or that way *winks*

Inviting a couple people sounds good :) I'm not set on anything, really. Whatever works out! *grins*

Hmm... Since it is an older show, it might be possible to get it on Ebay for a reasonable price. I'll have to check that out!

Re: Original BSG

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Classic!BSG was my very first sci-fi show, and I loved it to peices. Sure, it had its problems, but which show does not? And for the 1970s, it was pretty advanced - John Dykstra made the visuals, who was, after all, responsible for Star Wars as well.

It had such actors in the main cast as Lorne Greene (from Bonanza), Dirk Benedict (of The A-Team), Richard Hatch (from The Streets of San Francisco), George Murdock, John Colicos, and so on. The female regulars weren't all that great, but they had guest stars like Jane Seymour in it!

The writing was extemely uneven, but it had a unique charm, especially since it was completely independent from any Earth-related politics. People were devoted to it after 20 years still, without any sequels and movies, and very few series could say that.

Then came Ronald D. Moore and pulled it through the sh*t, raping beloved characters into something they were never supposed to be and turning the whole thing one depressing soft-pr0n dreck.

Sorry for the rant, but I feel really strongly about this.

Re: Pathways vampire AU

[identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know.

Most of its existing parts *are* short stories, actually, like "Favourite Son" or "The Return of Forrest Gates" or "The Path of Wolves", which focuses on Oz (from Buffy), or, indeed, "The Road Not Taken"... and a few others, including one-shots.

The problem is that I've been writing in this alternate universe for so long that certain parts start contradicting each other and very few still match the original concept. *le sigh*
