Doggie help needed!

Since I can hardly tell a bulldog from a greyhound, I'm asking people better versed in dog lore: what kind of breed are the two dogs Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbignton are holding on this photo?

I'm working on a story in which John Watson and Mary Morstan meet in an animal shelter for the first time, to find themselves a dog (each), and I thought it would be fun to give them the breed they actually have, but I haven't got a clue what kind of doggies these are.

(I didn't manage to make the photo appear in this entry. Clearly, I'm a klutz. Sorry.)

I found out due googling that MF also have a yellow labrador retriever that he loves to pieces, but these doggies seem so much cuter.

I wonder what John Watson would prefer. I could - in theory - give him the retriever and Mary two little dogs, but that might be a bit of overkill.

I think John does seem more like a retriever guy, but you also should consider where you have John living - if he has a small place or a deficient size flat. Retrievers are not small and they would need more space to maneuver around then a smaller breed. It's one of the things you have to consider when getting a dog.

He moves to St Mary Mead for the duration of this story, living in the cottage where Mrs Lestrange lived in the novel "The Murder at the Vicarage". It's a small house, but I suppose it would have a garden. I need to re-read the book for the details, but all traditional cottages in St Mary Mead seem to have a garden, so if this one doesn't, I'll give it one. *g*
