Hi folks! *waves*

Time is flying by, isn't it? It's that time of a year again - I'm getting older. In this case, I'm turning 55 on October 9, which used to be an important thing, back under the old regime. Women could retire at the age of 55 back then. So I've decided to ignore all that fantastic headway we've supposedly made towards democracy in the last two decades and enter my virtual retirement, blithley overlooking the fact that I'll have to work another 7 or 8 or only God knows how many years.

So, let's party! Last years virtual birthday party yielded 742 comments on 6 pages, which won't be easy to top, but we're good, aren't we? WE CAN DO IT! So, let's give it a try! In the recent years, it has always been great fun, so let's have fun again!

You're all cordially invited to help yourself to a slice of virtual Dobos Cake recipe - it's my absolute favourite, although I never managed to get it as good as my Garnny used to.

Cheers!

Note: The party will be closed on October 9, at midnight, sharp. Join us and have fun!

Is there a book, TV show, etc. that you haven't read/watched in years, but still feel passionate about? Why?

Although I can't think of things easily - but yuletide has got me rereading (and rewatching) a lot of things over the last two years. Things will remind me of something and then I can go on about it. :D

I'm going to cheat and name two.

It's been a couple of years since my reading my way through the Discworld novels led me to Night Watch, but I think it's one of the best books I've ever read. It's such a change from the usual Discworld novels, far more straight-out political and darker, even world-weary and a bit cynical towards the end, but really, I think it's one of the best fantasy books there are. If I ever get to re-reading some favorites, it'll be on my list.

It's been even longer since I read or watched Gundam Wing, I got into it 2002. I hadn't thought about Gundam Wing in years but then it came up in a conversation with [livejournal.com profile] ultharkitty a couple of months ago and it hit me like a ton of bricks how much I love this show. Ever since then, I haven't been able to shake it off again. Duo Maxwell's "I never saw any miracles, but I sure saw a lot of dead people" is as iconic for me as Harper's "the universe hates you. Deal with it."

Oooh, Discworld! :)

That is a series that I haven't reread in a while - although I've read most of the new books as I got them, although I'd been listening to the audio book of Mort recently. Night Watch is the one where Vimes goes back into his past? I remember it as being amazing - but can't actually remember the details. Carpe Jugulam was my favourite for ages because I really liked the fact that it addressed the question of what happens to the traditional coven of witches when they move on in life. I really should re-read the whole series! :D

Carpe Jugulam! Oh! That reminds me, I need to finish that. I had started listening to the audio book when I was sick, but then I got better, life went back to being busy and I forgot. I usually don't have the patience for audio books, sitting still and doing nothing but listen to a tape is very hard for me. I loved the 2/3 of it that I listened to, though.

Yeah, Night Watch is where he goes back to the past and is pulled into a revolution against the corrupt, people-torturing government, which ends up with everyone being disillusioned of revolution.

I like audio books as I can put them on while I'm doing housework, embroidery, playing computer games etc. :) I couldn't just sit and listen to one without doing anything else, but then I'm very bad at doing on thing at a time...

I'm not that good with understanding spoken English yet that I can do other things while I listen to an audio book, sadly. With German ones, I don't have that problem, but I sometimes get annoyed that I can't read at my own pace. I might have to get used to audio books, though, since I don't seem to find the time for books anymore.

I didn't realise that you weren't a native English speaker. I would have though that Discworld would be hard to follow in a foreign language!
I wish I were good enough at another language to read/listen to books in it - although I used to listen to French and Spanish language learning tapes while doing other things, in the hope that it would reinforce my learning of the languages in class.

It's alright, but I have to focus on it. I think the books would be far easier to follow, but I read them in German. After having a read a dozen books from the public library in German and gotten used to the different names, it seemed too much trouble to switch.

Well, I can neither speak French nor Spanish, you have me on that ;)

I've got a couple of them (very, very few) for the Original Star Trek, but I haven't listened to them for, oh, about a decade or so. Perhaps I should. I found that it's sometimes easier for me to understand spoken English when I have nothing else (ec moving pictures and stuff) to distract me.

Of course, there's always the danger of falling asleep...

Books: LOTR, plus several Hungarian authors you probably never heard of.

TV show: Battlestar Galactica, the classic. The one and only. I last watched some of it a year or so ago, to check dialogue for a story, and I find that I still love it evey bit as passionately as back in the 1980s, when it first found its way into this country.

Today, it's all about effects. Back then, it was about plot, characterization and stuff like that. Besides, unlike the ones in today's shows, those computers actually worked! If the characters hit a button, those displays coming up on the screens were real!

A then-advanced computer firm donated the things for the show - no-one else had computers so up-to-date in those days, they say.

Blake's 7, which I first watched as a bright-eyed eight-year-old, and the notorious ending of which broke my head slightly.

And The Lord of the Rings, the medium through which I carry on a conversation with my father.

As you know, Gemma hunted down Blake's 7 for me, and I'm currently in the process of watching it whenever I can. I'll soon reach the end of Series 1 and so far love it. Hey, it doesn't have subtitles (well, only Dutch ones, which aren't any help), and I still can understand the actors... most of the time.

Oh fantastic! So glad you like it! I know by modern standards it's quite slow and dated, so I can never be sure whether people will like it. But it's brilliant you're enjoying it! They're mostly theatre-trained actors which probably helps. (Gareth Thomas - playing Blake - went on to the Royal Shakespeare Company after B7.)

I can direct to fanfiction if the need arises...

I absolutely love it. I don't mind slow and dated; it has an intriguing plot, it has characterizations, and it has actors that can act (well, Blake and Vila anyway), and I can understand most of it by ear - what else can a girl wish for?

I prefer old-fashioned sci-fi that's about the story and not about special effects. Classic Trek was all pappmaché and ridiculous sets, but it was amazing; and so is Blake.

Vila is the best! Although I do find Avon (perhaps unintentionally) funny, too. That hairdo is hilarious, and the actor's stony expression would make a Vulcan die from envy. Has a nice smile, though, even if he rarely gets to use it.

And I like Gan. I always liked teddy bears.

Blake's 7

From: [identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com
I'm currently in the middle of "Breakdown", and I'm falling more and more in love with the characters with every new episode. Although Kelly letting herself charmed into releasing Gan was a bit transparent.

I even like the bad guys. Those mutoids were an interesting idea, although I didn't fully understand how they were made, just some vampire references. Were they reanimated corpses?

Re: Blake's 7

Date: 2011-10-06 09:46 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com
Yeah, that's a bit lame when she lets Gan go. Not quite the powerful guerilla fighter that she's shown to be in other episodes. Her characterisation suffers quite a lot from that.

With the mutoids: if I recall correctly, people undergo "modification" to become mutoids (they're referred to occasionally as "modified"). But they're not dead when they undergo the process. I think there's a suggestion that it's used as a form of punishment.

Really glad you're enjoying it!

She's such an interesting character, though. Not that I'd have anything against Jenna, mind you, she's a kick-ass girl, but I liked it that Kelly wasn't a Barbie doll.

What's also a bit annoying that the screenwriters seem to forget her telepathic abilities most of the time; in fact, every time it isn't needed as a plot device.

Re: Blake's 7

Date: 2011-10-06 03:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com
They never do quite get the hang of Cally. Blake's 7 isn't great for consistency, particularly in the world-building, but that's what makes it such a great fanfic universe.

Re: Blake's 7

Date: 2011-10-06 07:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com
I guess the actual world-building started many years later. We never got too much background info in those old shows, but they were great for temporary entertainment. And characterization and character interaction seem to have been a lot more enjoyable back then.

I guess they didn't know what to do with Cally. Being telepathic was cool, but only as long as they needed it to beat the bad guys.

Re: Blake's 7

And of course the creators didn't imagine that we'd be able to watch these episodes at home on VCR then DVD, over and over again. They'd assume that the episodes would be shown once, perhaps repeated once or twice, and then that would be it.

Merlin, Series 4

From: [identity profile] wiseheart.livejournal.com
Anybody seen it? What I read on tv.com sounds promising. Of course, my Epic Merlin Fic (TM) is now completely Jossed, but it doesn't matter, as long as the show's good.

Too bad Morgause seems to be back. For me, she's the most unconvincing character in the whole thing. Gwen's a Mary Sue, sure, but as they went for the Cinderella thing with her, it was to be expected. Morgause, though, could never sell me the frightening villain. She's just totally unimpressive - bad casting, I guess.

(Note this contains spoilers) ;)

I've seen the first episode (ie the only one broadcast so far).
Not too bad so far, although I'm bored of monsters that are scared of fire or force people to use fire as a weapon - why not something new?

Morgause doesn't seem to be going to be around for long as they killed her off (although she could come back in some way)...

Otherwise, it just seems to be more of the same, and as the story wasn't wrapped up in the episode it is hard to judge so far.

It's been awful with one class: a choice between gently broiling for two hours, or opening the windows and not being able to hear over the rush hour traffic.

And, of course, last week the campus was evacuated because of a bomb scare... And I broke both photocopiers. This week has been much better.

And it's due to rain tomorrow. Hurray!

And a birthday toast...

Yep, jelly babies are good! I like them, too! Does it make me a promising companion for Four?

It would do you no harm!

Myself, I would like to travel with Five or Seven or Nine or Eleven. Or Two.

Well, of the above I only know Nine, but I won't mind travelling with him, either. Tosh says she liked travelling with him, and I trust Tosh.

Five is everyone's favourite absent-minded uncle. And his stories are great.

Yeah, you know I don't really get that sort of stuff over here. :(

Had our tour guide not given our refounds back only on the last day, I could have bought at least five more Dr. Who DVDs at "Forbidden Planet". Now I'm sitting on the money here, Mum's considering changing it back, and can't get yummy, geeky fannish stuff for it, as I don't foresee another trip to the UK all too soon.

A shame, I'd like to watch some Five episodes. Preferably with subtitles and *not* on the computer screen. *g*

You could change it back, put the money into a PayPal account, transfer that to me, and I can go shopping for you with what there is.

Urgh... that's kind of you, but I'm afraid I have no idea what a PayPal account is and how to create one. *ducks in shame* Yeah, I am a dinosaur that lives under a rock. Why, I only got my first cell phone two years ago!

PayPal is a means of transferring money electronically. You can send money to me in one currency, and I can receive it in another currency. I use it for buying things from the US, and for receiving payments from the US.

Here's the website so that you can take a look and decide whether it's something you'd feel comfortable using:

Thanks for the link. I'll look it up and see whether I can understand how it works or not. If I can, and if they don't collect a fee that's bigger than the actual sum that needs to be transferred (such things are known to happen), then I might bother you in the future. ;)

TV addiction is a horrible thing!

If I recall correctly, it takes 25 primary comments to turn a page. This is primary comment #19 on page 2, if I'm not mistaken.

I read about that! Seems the poor guy died just a couple of days before the announcement was made, and they didn't hear before announcing. I assume he didn't know that he'd won - aren't the announcements a surprise?
