Today Mum and I finally got around to go to the bank and prove her identity (the idiotic demand I talked about a month or two ago). By sheer luck I realized that we can get to a different bank branch that's at a somewhat greater distance but easier accessible by car. So we took a taxi, went to the bank, spent there about two hours (Mum wanted to close her account since she hasn't really used it for at least five years), then took another taxi and came home. The somewhat annoying news is that we'll have to go back next week, as certain things need four working days to get processed, but at least we know we can do so with relative ease.

Coming home, I made instant fruit soup (just combining the powder with cold milk and let it stand in the fridge for a bit) and cauliflower with roast breadcrumbs and grated cheese - yum, not to mention very quickly done, as the veggies were pre-cooked and frozen. At the moment we are having 28°C and a downpour of biblical proportions; needless to say that the bacony is leaking. Again. *sigh*

Argh! That balcony!
I am certain that banks make it as difficult as possible to close accounts. I'm sure opening an account...with a stolen identity...is a piece of cake.

I'm glad you made it to the bank — honestly, they are now so very, very, careful with our money that is becoming difficult for us to get at it ourselves!

Sorry about the balcony.

What about the people who are unable to go to the bank? Plus I cannot fathom why it takes four days to close an account...

That is most likely true. And the balcony is the bane of my existence.

Sometimes I have the feeling that we are about to completely lose control over what's rightfully ours.

It's not just the savings account. She had some other stuff, too, and that's what takes time.

Over here banks are closing branches left right and centre, it's becoming very difficult for people who live in country towns.
My local branch at my nearby shopping centre closed so now I have to go to a more distant shopping centre about a half an hour drive away to visit my bank branch.

Glad that your mums bank stuff is nearly sorted.
